i love this movie and would love a fix-it (even though i respect the tragedy, i get the point, yes, very interesting line to end it on, but i still CRIED, motherfucker). i would be okay with a modern AU or a piece set in the canon period, whichever you prefer. i really enjoy peter dinklage's work and i thought he was incredible in this, and honestly i just want a love story that ends happily, really. some exploration of how and why cyrano's pining (and his silence, and his actions regarding christian) was selfish/unfair would be very welcome. i found it really interesting how disdainful cyrano was at points (calling roxane vain, scoffing at her privately) which was clearly like, a defense mechanism, but tbh one reason i do love this film (and other serious takes on cyrano) is how it has the potential to interrogate how this sort of longing in martyred silence can be more about you than it is about the person you love.

but at the same time - it's such a lovely, earnest story! i think the way dinklage and wright (director) talked about it in interviews, about how it really is a story about the transformative power of falling in love - it's just really refreshing and heartfelt.

some ideas: AU where cyrano has a bit more money, and their marriage is thus arranged? (in the film i don't think it says that they're cousins, but in the play they are, and a match like that would make sense if cyrano had wealth.) or a canon divergence where roxane discovers cyrano's deceit much earlier, of course. a modern AU where cyrano is like...catfishing her? (lol) or perhaps a canon divergence where christian is called to war earlier, and thus roxane marries cyrano to escape de guiche?

my new obsession. to quote a friend of mine: "absolutely nothing better than hostile flirting." i really like the clash between these two characters because it seems just completely situation-based - he's on the edge of losing it, she's desperately trying to make a space for herself in a restaurant that, frankly, is a little too crowded already - and i think there's something really delicious about two characters who dislike each other so intensely slowly realizing that they have more in common than they think. (or like each other more than they think.) they have these really intriguing moments of emotional honesty too that make me think the hostility was just, you know, growing pains. i feel like in s2 we're going to get a little bit more of them working together and that's gonna be fun as helllll

also it's just sexy. we all agree the stabbing was a metaphor, right?? i mean come on

some ideas: established relationship could be fun, set a few years in the future? (an outsider POV thing could be fun for this pairing - people witnessing their surprising closeness and being shocked by it.) secret relationship/FWB stuff is always fun. AU divergence where syd was hired by mike before he passed, instead of carmy, afterwards? (lots of potential there!!) and this is kind of off the wall for this fandom, but a funky time loop thing could be fun. The Worst Dinner Shift Ever, repeated over and over, and richie and syd are the only ones who remember. amazing.

dnw: rape/SA. also: i lost my brother (very) recently and am just now starting to crawl out of the hellish pits of grief (not that it's ever gonna go away, but i am showering more regularly, good for me) so i would appreciate it if you don't...focus too hard on mike, for my sake, thank you (like, it's cathartic to watch, but obsessing too hard about that aspect feels kind of masochistic, lmao)

idk, i love rarepairs, what can i say!! i think penelope deserves a love interest that she doesn't have to prove herself to, and i like the aspect of surprise to it, that nobody expects these two to get along that well, let alone fall in love. plus they seem well-suited, personality-wise - a writer and an artist? come on!

some ideas - a travel narrative, where penelope visits brighton or bath (two popular destinations for getting one's groove back, in regency romance lol) and runs into benedict unexpectedly (and....things happen.........)? an arranged marriage set up is always fun. maybe something set in the future, when penelope is officially "on the shelf" and supporting herself through writing - does she run into benedict at an art museum in rome? at a scandalous party in the house of a (gasp!) actress?

or - if you wanna play around with the whistledown aspect - maybe benedict discovers her secret, and then makes a deal with her to get her to print something specific in her column? (you decide what it is. is he helping one of his siblings escape a marriage, perhaps? [cough, eloise.] or is it a rivalry with some prick at his art school?)

i'm just in the market for something fun and fluffy, really. maybe an est. relationship later in life? or a secret affair post s2, as Penelope is getting over colin?? idk!! have fun with it!!

dnw: rape/SA (not that that's really an issue in this fandom lol), and please also - penelope is beautiful, we all know this, so i would prefer if you don't have benedict's sudden interest be in spite of her physical appearance, which is kind of insulting in and of itself. does that make sense? (hopefully lol) like, the love and attraction should be genuine, i guess!!
