I second-third-and-forth the canon-divergence AU genre tag. As a writer and a reader, I prefer canon-divergence AUs above any other genre, and it is definitely different than modern AUs (not all fandoms are contemporary).
I am not, however, for "canon with a trope." Canon-divergence does not necessarily include a trope. It could be, for example, one small change in a character's history that sets the story off on a different track. It could also mean a trope (soulmate AUs, etc.), but not necessarily.
