I can't imagine that someone who wanted a canon-divergent AU would be unhappy with something that retained the canon setting but wasn't necessarily AU and vice-versa.
That makes no sense. I think you misunderstand what "canon-divergent AU" means - it means that it does retain the canon setting but veers off at a certain point in terms of plot development.
