Yes, it's true that the series and the movies have the same characters/actors and the movies are sequels of the series. However, they have rather different vibes, and in my opinion it makes sense to keep them separated. More specifically, TOS series was made in the 60s, it aired on television and it was very episodic in nature, so people could watch random episodes with almost no references to the previous ones. On the other hand, TOS movies were made mostly around the 80s, they have some new characters and they have a specific continuity, to the point where some movies don't make much sense without watching them in the right order.
As someone who has requested and offered TOS movies multiple times in different exchanges, I've always had positive experiences when I could nominate the movies as their own fandom, because it was always clear to anyone requesting or offering that we were on the same page.
