The story of Machu Picchu, as Wilbert told it to us, was that it was under construction as a district capital when the Spanish arrived. Intimating that things were going badly with the Spanish, the Inca moved 700 people and all their gold from their capital of Cusco along the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, destroying the roads behind them with landslides. They remained there for 80 years but were aware that the Spanish, in search of the gold, were getting closer aided by a generation of half-Peruvian, half-Spanish collaborators. After 80 years, therefore, they hid the gold in the surrounding hills and some moved back towards Cusco where they were captured by the Spanish and others moved east into the Amazon where their descendents were briefly encountered by archeologists in the 1970s. The Spanish eventually reached Machu Picchu but found no gold. This story does not appear anywhere else I've looked (but, as noted, information at the level of detail I'm accustomed to for historic sites is much harder to find for Machu Picchu), but it wouldn't surprise me if it isn't the legend as told among the local Andean people.
I've now read all the finalist novels for the 2025 Hugo Awards. The trouble is, I read some of these books when they first came out last year. Still. I'm happy to share my impressions if people are interested.

But sometimes it can also be absolutely lovely. A few days ago I ordered some CDs--including one from one of my all time favorite groups--from the website of a trad musician and left a quick comment in the delivery instructions box to the effect of Hey, if you ever have you guys's fourth CD back in stock, please let me know.
I hit "purchase", watched the transaction go through, and went about my evening.
A day later, an email with the musician's name in the "sender" field popped up in my inbox during an extremely trying afternoon. Surely not, I thought.
But guys. Guys. It was. It was a real, an-actual-human-sat-down-and-wrote-this email from the actual musician expressing surprise and pleasure that someone had bought these CDs, giving some updates about the group (including that one of the members had passed away two years ago--a fact I'd already known, but hearing it directly from this person who was his bandmate and friend...ππ), and musing about the music the group had made together. The email contained both proper punctuation and grammar and proper emoji usage. The email also contained a proof of shipping photo of the packaged CDs in which the slightly messy interior of this person's car is visible. The whole thing is about as far away from social media influencer presentation as you can get and I cannot express how delightful I find this.
I replied saying that I'd been really sad to hear of the group member's passing and how much I absolutely loved their albums. He sent a second email thanking me again, adding that the group had never felt successful (PS: π±) and that it really meant something whenever someone said they enjoyed their music.
And, just. It would be hard to overstate how π€©π€©π€© I am over this entire situation. I have been listening to this group for 27 years and this individual's other projects for almost as long. This group has had a HUGE influence on my own playing, stylistically and in terms of repertoire. Two of their CDs are in my in my top 25 most-played albums of all time. On top of that, this person is widely regarded as one of the best players of his instrument, in this genre, in the world. And it turns he is also a genuine and down-to-earth human being. I would never in a million years have imagined I would have any kind of interaction with him, let alone that he would act like I'm the one doing him a favor by appreciating the art he has helped put out into the world.
Seriously. This has made my week and will quite possibly be one of the high points of this entire year. So yeah. Sometimes life is wonderful.

Now we can start looking ahead to next year's seminar, which will be the dojo's 50th anniversary seminar. I think that the goal is for me to take nidan at that seminar, but it's far enough out (May 30th) that there's no particular plans yet.
When I was talking to my mom about this (a sidebar in a conversation mostly about scheduling me flying out to visit my family), she told me that next year would also be the 50th year since women could attend the air force academy.
She was a member of that first class of women.
She is much more excited about my dojo's 50th anniversary.
anyway it is TOO HOT right now and I can't wait for the heat dome currently covering the east coast to break so that it stops being high 90s F/feels like over 100 F. At least the seminar only had normal summer heat! Not this nonsense!
(this nonsense, btw, is hot enough that the building fire alarms went off because of the heat! nothing was actually wrong! it's just Too Hot! isn't that fun!)
Anyway, this meant the first hour of the walk was in the dark going down steep steps with head torches which, once the novelty had worn off, wasn't much fun. We were, presumably, missing some stunning views.
The first ruin of the day was Intipata. This involved a slight diversion off the Inca road itself. According to Wilbert no one had even known it was there until a forest fire about 25 years ago. It's a bit difficult to convey it in photographs, especially as we don't seem to have managed to take any which have any people in for a sense of scale. It was huge, each individual terrace rising above our heads. As far as one can tell, it was a farm.
( Photos under the cut )
We then went to Wiñay Wayna which was very similar except that Wilbert insisted it was a laboratory not a farm. We had previously seen another Inca "Laboratory" at Moray but were somewhat confused by the distinction. Laboratories, we were told, were convex while farms were concave. The convex shape caused microclimates at each terrace and you could see different plants were grown on each terrace so it was obvious that the Inca's were experimenting. B. and I felt a frew crucial steps were missing here for something to be called an experiment, as opposed to growing things where they grow best. I was actually getting rather tired at this point so I just sat down and admired the view at Wiñay Wayna, while B. walked down to look at the buildings disturbing some Llamas who were grazing on the terraces.
( More Photos )
Wiñay Wayna was right by a campsite of the same name. It was currently out of use following landslides but was, apparently, where people normally spent the final night on the trail. Having left us to explore Wiñay Wayna, Wilbert sat down and chatted to the various guides and porters working at the camp. When we got back he reported that several other parties had gone past, none going to look at the ruins... which again seemed rather odd. I guess for a lot of poeple the Inca Trail is about the walk and then Machu Picchu and not so much about the less well known ruins along the way.
Once past Wiñay Wayna, we left the controlled part of the Inca Trail. At that point I half expected to start seeing day trippers up from Machu Picchu but we never passed anyone going the other way. Wilbert said this was because day trippers were lazy (Wilbert considered many people lazy, including anyone who spoke Spanish in preference to Quechua) but I would have thought quite a lot of people would like to walk along a bit of an Inca road without necessarily doing so for four days and going over Dead Woman's Pass.
Anyway, we continued for another 5 or so km, mostly on the flat but rising slightly until we came to a set of steps that Wilbert cheerfully informed us were called the "Gringo Killer". He had my measure by now and offered to take my sticks while I clambered up.
( Evidence under the Cut )
Then we turned a corner and came out at Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, the ceremonial entrance to Machu Picchu. This is where you get your first glimpse of the city.
( Photos )
I'll leave Machu Picchu to another post. We were half an hour "late", but Wilbert had a back-up plan which involved showing us around himself and we bumped into the rest of the party during the tour. I was a little frazzled when we got there - a combination I think of the early start, a fairly long walk and the fact my esim wasn't working so I was out of WhatsApp contact from our other guide and so couldn't coordinate meeting up (I eventually managed to contact him via B's phone). But once I'd sent the WhatsApp message and had something to eat, I cheered up enough to enjoy the city.
I felt even better after a bus ride down to Aguas Calientes and a late lunch.

- Exchanges due in May/June (
hurtcomfortex,
pickmeupexchange,
idproquo,
seasonsofdrabbles,
diegetic_exchange,
fandom5k + mystery pinch-hits and treats): Still at 12/12, but I edited the thing I needed to, so now this batch is just waiting for various reveals, assuming I don't pick up any super-late pinch hits. (I think there's only one that I even know the fandoms for at this point, though, so I may be safe?)
idproquo just revealed last night, but I haven't had a chance to read my fic yet. I'll report back on that next week, which is one of my weekly goals!
- Exchanges due in July/August (
caseficexchange,
nonconex,
justmarriedexchange + future stuff): I'm still at 0/3.
justmarriedexchange assignments haven't come out yet, but should over the next couple of days. I'm very excited to see what I get, since there were a lot of really tasty requests. Does it count as gaming if you game for, like, 5 people all at once? π€£ My goal this week is to get at least 2 more scenes written for my long-fic, and then to solidify my plan for at least one of the other two assignments.
- Potentials for July/August:
seasonsofdrabbles for sure, but that's not up for a while. Currently watching nominations for
raremaleslashex &
littleblackdressex. You know, I would've sworn that I didn't currently have any LBD characters, but kudos to the person who nominated MCU Loki who is, indeed, a LBD and needs to get fucked by everyone, ASAP. I still doubt I'll be able to sign up for either of these, but pinch hits/treats are a definite possibility. Further out on my radar are
rarepairexchange &
iddyiddybangbang. Also, the big hubbub right now is around
battleshipex which I'm pretty sure I'm not doing. It sounds way too competitive and social for my tastes, but I'm sort of watching it just to see if maybe it's not as opposite my natural inclinations as my initial suspicions.
- I've got another of my May/June reveals: For the Kill Your Double Flash Exchange, I grabbed a pinch hit for which I wrote One, Two, Infinity: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan/every single other incarnation of Zhao Yunlan (yes, literally) for Guardian - priest. As long as there continue to be horny prompts for these two, I will write them! π
- Nothing to see on Femslash Salad Bar...
- I never get a chance to watch anything over the weekend, so no updates on BNHA, but I'll be starting up again today!
- I read tons of Noblesse this weekend! I think I have two arcs left? Rai's doing better now, thankfully. He's not allowed to die. Neither is Frankenstein. The two of them must be weird together forever. Is it wrong that I go 'ho-hum' through the battle scenes to get to the scenes where nothing is happening but characters drinking tea? I think not!
- I realized that I haven't had a hard-copy book to read for a while, which is weird, but I really want to finish Noblesse before I pick something new up. My current inclination is Heaven Official's Blessing by MXTX, which I know nothing about other than that it's long and MXTX wrote it, which is pretty good recommendation for me!
- Figure skating has been kicking my butt lately. I've been super busy at work, so I have very little brain, and I'm trying to learn a new footwork program and a new synchro program, while not forgetting my current freestyle program in the process. It does not help that my coach has completely changed my footwork program 3 times now. It's just not sticking! Oh well, eventually it has to, right?
- Also, I finally signed up to
pinchhitbingo, just to see if I've got bingo. And...I think I do? I will talk more about this next week, once I've had time to analyze my board more carefully.
Goals for this week: 1) Get 2 more scenes written for long-fic. 2) Get my idea into shape for one of my other assignments. 3) Read/comment on
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
Thanks for creating for me - whether you are my assigned writer or creating a treat, I really appreciate it and can't wait to see what you've made!
General Preferences:
LIKES:
This varies a bit by fandom, so please see those specific sections (for instance, there are some specific fandoms/ships where I prefer darker stuff, and most stuff below is relatively fluffy/lighthearted) but here are some general ideas of what sort of fic I enjoy.
I love a lot of the fandom cliches, particularly Only One Bed, fake dating turned real, friends to lovers. Can never get enough of those.
I’m a big fan of reading about characters in a relationship growing as people together, discovering new sides to themselves, figuring out how to live or raise kids together, etc.
I like soulmate AUs a LOT so long as the characters still get some chance to develop feelings organically, whether or not they are already aware of their soulmate status. Stuff where they find out before they are in love and kind of fight it at first, but end up getting to know and falling for the person anyway — love it, can’t get enough.
Big into people falling in love with someone they'd never expect.
I really love outside character perspectives/reactions on a particularly unexpected relationship.
If you have characters from different cultures, countries, worlds, planets, etc. I really really love stuff that explores cultural differences in relationship norms (regardless of the nature of the specific relationship, I love this between friends, colleagues, etc. too as well as lovers) and where characters share their cultures with each other.
Some things I really like for smut fic: Oral sex, especially cunnilingus or rimming. Strap-ons. Motorboating, nipple play (no clamps though), boobs/chest focus. Marking, including/especially scent-marking but also stuff like leaving scars. Femdom in F/M. Creative and weird uses of non-human biology in sex in sci-fi and fantasy scenarios.
GENERAL DNWs, no exceptions:
ABO/Omegaverse of any kind| Ace/aro/demisexual/demiromantic headcanons | Animal death/abuse/harm | Autistic or neurodivergent headcanons as main focus of the story | Bathroom kinks | Breathplay or other potentially life-threatening kink | Child sexual abuse, including in backstories (unless it is canonical. Note that a character having been abused as a child in some other way does not mean that "child sexual abuse" is canonical) | Daddy kink | Detailed violence/torture/gore | Explicit physical abuse | Extreme underage (i.e. younger than the age when teens typically start having consensual sex IRL) | Feederism or other weight-fetishization | Focus on feminine grooming rituals (such as doing each others' hair/makeup) in F/F | Genital mutilation (such as sounding) | Issuefic. Feel free to give your characters strong opinions and explore fraught issues, but the key word there is explore; I don't want to feel like I'm being lectured to or taught a lesson | Jewish or Muslim characters with uncircumcised penises | Loss of intelligence/Flowers for Algernon plots | Making canonically LGBTQ+ characters cis/straight | Men domming women | Mpreg-specific: butt babies, surprise uteruses, or other stuff that's implausible to whatever fictional universe you're in | Negative/stigmatizing discussion of abortion | Pre-relationship/UST that never resolves in romance/ship fic | Pregnancy in a female character (unless in the background) | Rape/non-con | Sexual orientation headcanons that "contradict" their romantic and sexual relationships or "if it's you, it's okay" | “Soulmate AUs” where the main couple are not actually soulmates | Using feminizing terms for male characters | Women giving up their ambitions/careers/dreams for a relationship treated as romantic/desirable/ideal, especially in F/M
GENERAL DNWs, with specific exceptions for specific fandoms/characters:
Amnesia/memory loss (okay with this for Utena, as long as the memories come back by the end) | AUs that change the setting or central relationship significantly* (exception: a less-bigoted version of the canon is fine for historical fiction or historically-inspired fantasy like FE3H, but not modern AUs or otherwise moving them into a fundamentally different setting/time period. except with Faisal/Lawrence I'm fine with modern AUs!) | Lifestyle BDSM (okay with and in fact big into this with Faisal/Lawrence, so long as Faisal is the dom) | PIV in smut (this is not really my personal preference ever, but I'm fine with it in requested het ships unless otherwise noted, and taking my other smut preferences into account) | Trans/non-binary headcanons for focus characters (specifically headcanons, does not apply to canonically trans/non-binary characters) (exception: fine with it in any fandoms where it isn't prohibited in the signup, provided it isn't used to make same-gender combos F/M or to add in more PIV)
*Setting changes means like significant shifts in place/time or worldbuilding, like a sci-fi AU for a realistic fiction work, or moving a historical or futuristic work to the present day. It does not mean plot-divergence, or smaller worldbuilding changes (e.g. a soulmate AU) in an otherwise similar universe. You can use your best judgment on where to draw the line, obviously. "Central relationship" changes are stuff like changing people's ages, genders/sexes, species, etc. or "reversing" in-canon character dynamics (like giving characters each other's jobs or social roles).
Usually DNW, with broader exceptions for certain fandoms or ships, please look at the specific fandom:
Abusive relationships between requested characters/pairings/that are non-canonical | Big power differentials between members of the main couple in ship fic | Cheating on main couple in ship fic | Major Character Death | Whump/dark fic (as stated in some of the fandom sections, I'm never really a fan of full-on "Hurt No Comfort," but I'm cool with and even prefer darker themes for some fandoms)
Additional caveats:
Consent: Characters do not have to give explicit verbal consent to be considered "consenting." Characters being drunk/high/stoned is fine as long as they're both clearly into it, and as long as they're not clearly way past the point where they could say no IRL (just use your best judgment here, I'm just really tired of fics where one beer is treated like a "dubcon" situation).
Dubcon: I do not want any outright non-con/rape, but I am fine with some degree of dubcon as long as it's a situation where the person would be interested in that other person if they were clear-headed (or whatever the case may be), where it's more of a catalyst to acting on real feelings, and also where whomever is not "dubconned" isn't intentionally taking advantage of the other party. I prefer mutual dubcon, and I especially enjoy the classic tropes like "sex pollen," pon-farr/fuck-or-die stuff with sci-fi and fantasy races, etc.
Historical accuracy: I'm someone who has a strong interest in history, including in the periods for historical fiction works here. I don't expect exacting historical accuracy, but please don't get basic and broad things wrong: some examples would be which countries existed, having people use overly modern slang, etc. My one caveat is anything involving music, as that is my own area of academic expertise. If you're going to incorporate something involving music history or music trivia please make sure you really and truly know it (as in, are not just relying on something you saw online or you remember your high school band teacher telling you) because it will truly take me out of the fic if people get things wrong there! Characters talking about music, playing it, going to concerts, etc. is fine, but if they are going to make a fact claim about it, fact-check it if it's intended to be accurate (obviously, if you intend the character to be wrong or unsure, that's fine). (For the purposes of this exchange, this section applies most to A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia and The Gilded Age. FE3H is set in its own medieval fantasy world that I don’t expect to be overly similar to the historical Middle Ages any more than the original game is, so go to town.)
Fandom-Specific Preferences:
So I requested most of these for previous exchanges, and my preferences are pretty similar this time around! Here are the letters for those. Just keep in mind the marriage nature of this particular exchange when looking at these ideas/prompts:
- Star Trek DS9: Star Trek Holidays 2023
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses: Purim Gifts 2024 for F/F ships, Just Married 2023 for all ships
- Revolutionary Girl Utena: Yuletide 2023
- A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia: Yuletide 2023
- The Gilded Age: This is my first time requesting this fandom! Go based on what my sign-up says, and know that my preferences are fairly similar to other period/historical fandoms other than that I'm not really into the AUs here. I want it set in the time period and setting of the show, and preferably fairly close to "canon." Caveat is that as of this writing, I don't yet know what season 3 has in store, so "close to canon" in the sense of "where the show is at at the end of season 2." But feel free to draw on the events of season 3 if you want! I'm sure I'll still love it so long as it still adheres to my DNWs from the sign-up. (And don't worry about spoilers: I'm a spoilerphile, and I'll also be watching this season week by week as it airs in the U.S.)
My general preferences are here.
DNW: unrequested mundane AU | female characters in fridges | non-con | violent dub-con | graphic violence | gore | graphic sexual violence | cruelty/death to animals | cruelty/death to children | requested character death | unrelieved grimdark | bigotry by the good guys | first or second POV | reader fic | ABO | soulbonds | wildly OOC in a non-cracky way
SMUT DNW: creampies | the word “cunt” | anal | hate each other out of bed | underage | incest
MAYBE: no-harm dubcon (sex pollen or “fertility artifact”) | period typical attitudes | infidelity | power dynamic
Shower the treats like rice!
I love weddings. You cannot be too fluffy or have too many details, or get into too-ridiculous or too-complicated situations. You want to go way over the top, I am your girl.
These are a few of my very favorite tags:
Wedding Reception - Unmarried Couple Fantasize About Their Future While At Friend's Wedding - YES I love it! The whole, that could be us factor! Also here for frank discussions of we are not having X at our wedding sort of stuff
Wedding Reception - Catching the Bouquet – Yes it’s old-fashioned and silly and I love it. I especially love conspiracies to make sure someone specific gets it.
Wedding Ceremony - The Wedding Day Disaster You Laugh About in the Future - So my first husband had to bribe a friend to overnight the ring because he left it on the kitchen counter (LDR). It seemed huge at the time. I’m open to ideas as long as they can still get married and aren’t too unhappy!
Proposal - While Watching Happy Friends Get Married – YES, although here maybe looking for that moment of I should ask, because it’s rude to propose at someone else’s wedding. Or a private proposal that doesn’t detract.
Wedding - Something Old New Borrowed and Blue – I love this. I could read a thousand variations on it, because what I love is seeing what’s important to the characters.
Wedding - That One Perfect Photograph at Your Wedding – That one moment you remember forever.
Anniversary - 1st Year – I love this opportunity to look forward and look back and be in love!
Wedding - Family Heirlooms Passed Down For Wedding – This can be tied to old/borrowed/new/blue but I love that little connection to the past or a loved one you miss.
Dimension Travel - Getting Together After Meeting The AU Married Couple Version of Themselves – I love the meeting AND the realization and the getting together.
Wedding Reception - Best Man and Maid of Honor Get Together – It’s a classic, especially if the bride and groom are trying to throw them together.
Bachelor(ette) Party – Hijinks & Shenanigans – Also a classic, as long as the hijinks do not involve infidelity.

Here is where I stand:
- Exchanges due in May/June (
hurtcomfortex,
pickmeupexchange,
idproquo,
seasonsofdrabbles,
diegetic_exchange,
fandom5k + mystery pinch-hits and treats): 12/12: I picked up and finished one new thing, and my long-fic ended up being a monster - almost twice as long as I guesstimated - but I know have a draft done and just have to fine-tune it. That is my only goal this 'week' (heh, assuming that I post next week Monday as I should, then that's barely any time at all). I will edit up my monster, and then other posted fics that are revealing soon. My guess is that this will be the end of things I write for May/June, unless I grab anymore shiny pinch-hits with near deadlines (beyond, y'know, the one that I already did π).
- Exchanges due in July/August (
caseficexchange,
nonconex,
justmarriedexchange + future stuff): A new category! I'm currently at 0/3, unsurprisingly. I've moved Case Fic over since this is when the fic is actually due. Assignments for Noncon Ex just came out Monday. I offered a wide variety of things for that and was kind of surprised by what I got, but it's one of the things I was excited to nominate, so I have many thoughts about it, which I'll start noodling on next week. Also, I've signed up for Just Married, because there were a bajillion things nominated/requested that interested me, although of course I haven't started because I don't even have my assignment yet.
- Potentials for July/August: I will also definitely do
seasonsofdrabbles again when that comes up. I'm still TBD on
raremaleslashex,
littleblackdressex,
rarepairexchange, and
iddyiddybangbang.
diegetic_exchange has revealed, and is in the anon period! I got three fantastic gifts for this. I love seeing how much fun and creativity people had with all the prompts. π
- #DaryanCrescendIsOverParty for Ace Attorney - A delightful social media feed of Gavinners fans freaking out about Daryan's arrest for murder. Lots of fun trolling and internet personalities in this one!
- Why Not Both? also for Ace Attorney - A lawyer RPF fan squeeing online about Phoenix/Edgeworth and how there are definite indications that a mutual proposal is ensuing. Very cute, seriously read it!
- The Great Program Debate for Yuri on Ice!!! - The Reddit thread of figure-skating fans grading this year's programs. Just delightful all around!
- Some stuff I've written has also been deanoned, so I can post about it now. These were all pinch hits I picked up, because they sounded neat:
- In the Light: Margot/Mark from Dial M for Murder (yes, the old Hitchcock movie!) written for
fluffityfluffexchange. I'd seen this movie already about half a dozen times before, so was intrigued when this popped up, did a rewatch and read of the prompts, and knew I wanted to go for it. I liked the contrast of all the horrible things Margot had to endure in her previous marriage, compared to her post-traumatized reactions to being in an actual healthy, loving relationship. This was such a intimidating fandom to write because the plot of the movie is so good, but I'm glad I had a chance to play in that world. This is why more people should request old movies! I would never have thought to write for this otherwise.
- Forged in Pain: The War Master from Doctor Who BFA written for
whumpex. I saw this request during sign-ups and was very tempted by it, but didn't end up signing up because I didn't know exactly what I wanted to request and was super busy at the time anyway. But I was delighted to see it come up as a PH! I think I saw the PH and then the night after I dreamed up the whole plot, and then I wrote the whole thing in one go the morning after. It was one of those 'the fic writes itself' things, and I do so love writing in the War Master's voice. He'd so incredibly fucked up and twisted.
- A Taste of Blood: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan from Guardian - priest also written for
whumpex. As anyone who's been reading this DW (which is no one, lol) will know, I've just finished reading these webnovels, and seeing all this requester's prompts is what got me started on that in the first place. So I was very excited to finally be able to grab one of their PHs and try to do it justice! And I just have to say: Zhao Yunlan is SO MUCH fun to write! Seriously: so, so much fun.
- In the Light: Margot/Mark from Dial M for Murder (yes, the old Hitchcock movie!) written for
- Nothing for Femslash Salad Bar, although I did have a niggling for that Bedelia/Miriam fic I want to write for this. Not sure I'll have the time, though.
- I'm back at BNHA and more than halfway through S2 now! Finally finished the tournament arc (tournaments are not my favorite thing, TBH) and am into the internships. However, my favorite thing in the entire series up until this point is now Bakugo trying to come up with his hero name! How many horrible mash-ups of 'explosion' and 'murder' can he come up with? Let's find out! π€£
- I'm still really enjoying Noblesse! It has gotten quite a bit more battle-y, which is not my favorite, but I do appreciate that Rai (and to a lesser degree, Frankenstein) can pretty much just say "nope!" and end that shit in a heartbeat. I am very anxious about Rai's well-being, and am beginning to develop a sneaking suspicion that this manhwa will not turn out happily for him. π’ Very anxious to read where this is all going.
Goals for this (pseudo-)week: 1) Quick final editing pass on fics that are going live this weekend. 2) Hard edit on my monster, to whip it into shape. 3) Actually post on Monday next week. π€£
The first of these was Runkuraqay which Wilbert described as a fuel station for people, which we interpreted as meaning an Inn.
( Runkuraqay Pictures )
We then went up and over a pass, a little lower than Dead Woman's Pass the previous day, and a shorter climb because we'd started higher. Then we came down towards Sayacmarca, a much larger ruin.
( Pictures )
Once we left Sayacmarca we continued down to about 3,500m. After that the trail was much more level. Strava shows a steady climb, but I felt much more able to look about me at the scenery rather than paying close attention to where I was putting my feet. As the trail levelled out we got to Qunchamarka, another Inn. It wasn't clear how to access this, but we walked around the outside. I think at this point we were up in a Cloud Forest - though I'm hazy on the difference between Cloud Forest, Rainforest and regular forest, all of which I think we walked through at various points.

Wilbert spent some time telling us about the Inca Tunnel we would meet. B was pretty sure this was just a large fallen rock which the Inca's had run the path under. Wilbert got distracted at this point since he found a dog in the brush above the tunnel. After some encouragement he got it to climb down and it ran off down the path ahead of us. We met it again at the next campsite where, presumably, it belonged. I'm afraid we failed to photograph the dog, so you'll just have to imagine it.
( B did photograph the tunnel, however )
We arrived at our campsite in good time for lunch. The camp was above another Inca ruin, Phuyupatamaca, and after lunch Wilbert packed us off to take a look at it on our own. This involved going down some steep steps and it seemed like the water source for the camp was at the bottom, because we were passed by a lot of porters carrying water back up them. At the time we assumed he sent us to look at it then, rather than the next day, because the plan was to leave before light so that we would get to Machu Picchu in time to meet up with the rest of our group. However it transpired that pretty much everyone was leaving before light and we seemed to be the only party who's guide thought to encourage us to check out the ruins we would miss in the dark.

We had an excellent position in the camp right next to a large rock that overlooked the view. We were next to the camp of a group of three people who were on the "Luxury" tour. Wilbert was very contemptuous - they had three guides and a masseuse. They were also served cocktails in glasses made of glass when they reached camp. The most disconcerting thing was that they were played into camp by Andean pipes. B felt he would have been quite happy with the cocktails and the larger tents (including a shower tent!) and so on, but felt he wouldn't have coped with the pipes.
