This canon is pretty much all about the characters' tangled relationships and I wouldn't mind an extension of that (relationships that are not specifically requested are welcome!). Maybe an exploration what social situation led up to the weirdness we saw in the game?
For the specific relationships I've requested, I'll describe what I like:
The Beast/The Photographer: How dangerous her scenes feel. The Photographer seems safe on the surface, but she's one to gain someone's trust her and then be utterly terrifying and ruthless about it. Pouring alcohol down the Beast as she sputters and chokes. Casually revealing that she knows the Beast is a fake and not actually the Prince as the Beast is pinned underneath her. Blackmailing her for it afterwards. What the fuck is going on with her?
The Swimmer/The Photographer: Conversations about drowning in the Swimmer and hedonism. A smooth front that's good enough to drown in that's full of misdirections. The Photographer being the type of person who would plot with the Swimmer about revenge leading-on The Prince, while knowing that "The Prince" is actually the Beast without telling her. And also going behind the Swimmer's back to get something she wants from the Beast in exchange for possibly falsely-promised emotional revenge after. The Swimmer knowing less and being less observant about her own ex than the Photographer is.
The Boy/The Prince: OH BOY. The Boy taking after the Prince's dresses and Machiavellian tendencies where after turning on the Beast he thinks the Prince would be proud of him for turning out to be as manipulative as he taught him. Whatever relationship they had that led them to that. The Boy being submissive at baseline but taking cues from the Prince to build up a backbone made of manipulation in the worst asshole doormat way possible. And, of course, how they used to smoke weed and kiss in dresses a long time ago.
The Prince/The Photographer: Their styles of manipulation are a bit different: The Prince is ruthless but his charm is all surface level, and strikes me as someone who doesn't know what he's doing and that's why he ended up with so many easily-avoided enemies, while the Photographer has a huge following and is better at not obviously being off-putting. They seem to have a lot of mutual respect and/or detente, which is interesting.

I could make a request for every character in this game and being restricted to four was such a challenge. I would appreciate any character in a fic, including unmentioned ones, if you think they'd be interesting. I also think pre-apocalyptic OCs would be cool!
I love bugs and bug biology, and Hollow Knight's tone and WTF-style humor (looking at you Grubfather and Millibelle and the corpse kitchen and the many, many cannibalism mentions) makes me think it lends itself well to weird bug social customs. (How does a bug survive in a world full of bug-eating?)
Herrah the Beast
Why, ultimately, did she trade her life for having a Hornet? Deepnest fascinates me as it's a civilization of spiders in a world populated by insects, and they sure seem hostile to the rest of Hallownest. They violently resisted the rule of the Pale King, so was it the end times that suggested partnerships? But to leave the entirety of Deepnest in the claws of a young half-wyrm baby? Why? Hornet doesn't seem especially tied down to Deepnest either for all her chasing and trying to kill you.
Mantis Lords
Mantises resist the infection! Why? They attack all that approach with murderous intent but bow to those strong enough to slay their way in and defeat the Lords. I left behind so many sundered mantis parts on my run but they don't seem to mind once I proved myself. What is a Lord to a mantis warrior or a mantis youth? How do they maintain clear minds?
The Pale King
The Pale King seems to have taken his form to be more worldly to the followers, but the ones in the White Palace are disturbingly servile to him. I think it's interesting how other higher beings seem to have created their citizens (like Radiance/moths, Unn/mosskin), but the only things the Pale King seem to have made are some White Palace inhabitants (like the Kingsmould) and the Vessels, while Hallownest citizens seem be ordinary bugs, or at least lack the paleness of his other creations. And several civilizations have had intelligence before his appearance, like the spiders, the mantises, and those outside the Kingdom's Edge, despite the proclamation of "taming our savage souls" in the Elegy to Hallownest.
Soul, which is very related to the Pale King/White Lady through the limitless Kingsoul, seems to have a sinister side with the existence of Soul-warped Follies and Mistakes. Or perhaps the Soul Tyrant's quote of "the answer was in the soul that animates our bodies" implies that they're all related to the Pale King through some form of creation. Or perhaps-- since soul is harvested from still-living bugs and the corpses of bugs, and the Kingsoul is an endless fountain of Soul... could that imply that that's the point of the Pale King's followers, or perhaps he's built up such a bank of Soul that it's considered endless? What role could the Snail Shamans, whose culture seems to be heavily influenced by soul, play? Was Soul something given to bugs or something that always existed or taxed or was it some way to control them? What is the nature of a wyrm's thrall?
The Radiance
Dawning. By the time the game starts, most of the population of Hallownest is dead or turned into zombies. An interesting note is that the style guide said not to include any sun-related time words like "day", because the Radiance represents the sun.
Despite the Seer's idea that "this kingdom was born from [the] betrayal" of forgetting the Radiance... even those that choose to remember/worship the Radiance like the Moss Prophet die once you achieve the Monarch Wings (which also corresponds with the Crossroads becoming infected and the tiny flies transforming into huge explosive glowing demon vultures). Was it trying to defend herself by any means necessary? (Even by spending the lives of those that did remember?)
I'm a bit charmed by her dream nail dialogue as well, with rather readable phrases like "...I DO NOT FEAR YOU..." and "...I WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN..." and "...LET ME BE FREE..." and "...ANCIENT ENEMY..." unlike the grammarless dialogues infected enemies have. Being forgotten seems to be less literal than whether physical, living bugs are there to remember her or not. I wonder what makes a higher being a higher being.
The Seer, last living member of the Moth Tribe, also hands the method to kill the Radiance to the player character as "penitence for old crimes"... I wonder what those crimes could be?
How did bugs react to the infection when it was in its starting stages? How did it spread?
An interpretation of the threads we got in canon in the form of longform fic would be appreciated!

Amaria/Any: Loved the game's contrast of the competent, charismatic, powerful gym leader who bails you out of trouble and the emotional disaster ball who threatens and attempts suicide after she accidentally learns of the secret. Titania who got pressured into starting a relationship she didn't want because Amaria's suicide attempts would have her kill herself otherwise, and the ensuing memory shenanigans meaning that Titania would either have to keep her secret longer or watch Amaria try to kill herself again. Amaria knowing deep down knows that Titania doesn't love her, and still trying to make her stay to the point of attempted murder on her behalf. This canon's stuffed to the brim with characters so having someone else there to Amaria to latch onto, or perhaps make a healthy relationship with, may be interesting...?
Fern/Any: He has an incredible superiority complex and him making the player character beg him was entertaining. I think his speech about Corey being weak and natural selection is especially interesting since you'll spend the entire game wiping the floor with him in every battle. Also, I found everyone hating him amusing, and I'd think it'd be funny to see him try to suffer through a relationship with someone.
Adrienn: Xe is the nicest character in this entire game. I really like how xe encourages the player character in xyr gym battle, and xyr sheer friendliness and enthusiasm at getting you to succeed is a fresh contrast in the game full of miserable people. Adrienn's managed to revitalize an entire city, how will xe handle individual people?

The heroine of the story, and ultimately the one who decides the fate of the friend group (and the entire world). Will they live or die? ... Could things have been different, if it was her and someone else and the end of the world? Could it have been better? (It's hard to imagine it being any worse.)
Teagan Almace
It's hard for me to dislike someone when every other character and the narrative dislikes said person so much. Her preferences get run over a lot, clothes or food or trying to run a performance that won't end the world out of incompetence or not ending the world after the fact. And in the end, even at her worst, Teagan's violence comes from being pushed to that point after getting assaulted by someone trying to force her to listen, rather than as something she's owed by the world.

They're friends... and Alto hates Teagan, but it has to be her. Why? What was their friendship like when they were kids? How did it become the disaster it was in canon? Alto was much more restricted then, so could either of them have behaved differently?
Aubrey Spica
Sad suicidal starchild. It's kind of a shame everyone had to know since maybe it'd been better for them to forget rather than have it immortalized in Uncommon Times, but then again, if it's stuck to their soul, did they ever have a chance? They're just so awful for making everyone they care about worry about them. Don't forget, and don't forget that they're still might be just using Alto, the first warm body that came along. After all-- haven't they worried everyone enough already? That kind of stuff doesn't just go away. They'll have to try extra hard to not worry everyone else to make up for it. Only sticks in their future. But it's okay. It's what they deserve. That's the price for living after trying to die. Maybe... maybe they're not happy about it, but it's never in any meaningful way. They're just petty. They wouldn't dare get into her way. Not with what they've done already. In canon it's out of love. Is it?
I also really appreciate them having dysphoria and their approach to androgyny, just as a side.

Giving, taking away, the fate decided one on person's whims-- it's so much easier to think it's not in your control at all, isn't it? You had no future and you had nothing to look forward to and for a little bit it looked a bit brighter in each other's eyes... but wanting that brighter isn't a thing you can have in a situation like this. You have no control. That's not a bad thing!! She's your friend, and she should get to decide! It's not like you've never seen something alluring in that darkness yourself. That's why it's okay...

Aubrey's closed off, Teagan's not going after people who don't make themselves heard. They don't talk much during the game. When Aubrey does start talking to Teagan, it's the same stuff as everyone else... but, hey, that was also after Aubrey learned to open up to the rest of the group, huh? To be more connected, like everyone else?
And if they really did fall in love with the first person who'd woke them up... if it could have been anyone, not Alto in particular...

I love the way these three get on together, especially in "That Stands for Pool" and "The Gordon Caper" where all three of them do some really boneheaded things but by their powers combined they're able to fix the situation. I'm not a big fan of "getting together"-type stories--I'd rather the plot be about something else and the relationship serve as the backdrop, if that makes sense.
I'm down for slice of life or shenanigans or hurt/comfort or even a little smut, so long as it's not too graphic (a PG-13 instead of an R, if you will).

I'm a sucker for 1960s sci-fi featuring characters named Jim and their character actor sidekicks who are perfect for me to project onto.
There's so much that I love about these two--I love their banter, I love that they have two very different specialties but lots of respect for the other, I love that they genuinely care about each other. I love that I love that Jim is essentially the world's worst secret agent because everyone knows his name. I love that Artie is a traditional Renaissance man with a slew of different interests (not unlike the actor who played him...). I love that they can't go more than a few months without running into villains they know personally (Loveless, Valentine, Count Manzepi...)
If you want to go the plot route I loved almost all of the early episodes, especially in season two, with Night(s) of the Returning Dead, Man-Eating House, and Lord of Limbo. If you'd rather go slice-of-life, I absolutely love the Wanderer and imagining what it would be like to actually live in when there's not a case/adventure/night-of going on.
I don't mind things turning darker, but I'd rather have, if not a happy ending, then at least a hopeful one.

I love Archie so much. She's sneaky, fat, unapologetic, plays kinda fast and loose with gender roles and people's expectations... she's all the me I could be! I'd love to hear more about the kinds of swindles she was running prior to "River of Teeth."
I was fascinated with the way she and Adelia interacted. The fact that Adelia went to the trouble of making her a knife out of the hippo that killed Neville and that Archie showed some degree of concern/compassion to Adelia even after the group started becoming suspicious of her says a lot to me. This could be a good place for some canon-divergence, or at least some canon-extending so we get to see the two of them together. If you want to extend past the end of the second book and Houndstooth's ranch dream works out, that would be absolutely amazing.

One of the things I love about the pulp version of The Shadow is the fact that there genuinely is no mystical nonsense going on--Allard really is just a guy who's really good at sneaking and shooting. I like his backstory, too--the fact that he fought in the first world war, is an ace pilot, casually befriended a tribe of people and convinced them to back up his story about being a missing person for all those years, it's all really cool compared to the Lamont Cranston story of "Rich guy studies with magical Indians and then does stuff."
I requested the group of Allard and any Xinca because it's fascinating that he was able to just ask these people "Hey, will you pretend I've been here for the last eight years" and they're all "Yeah sure, we've got you." Did they have any motive in any of this, or were they just extremely agreeable? And what about the two who come to New York? Did they want to leave their home? What do they do with themselves when Allard's out running around as Lamont Cranston or The Shadow?
I don't really expect anything from this group because it's awkward that the Xinca are a real people who did really live in Guatemala at the time but it's hard to find any contemporaneous info about them (all I've been able to find is a few partial dictionaries and articles about the Xincas' more modern struggles).
So, I would be perfectly content with just Allard doing his thing, whether that be a casefic or worldbuiilding (how does he keep all those plates spinning, anyway?) or even something more historical like the war years or when he initially went missing.

I'm very fond of character-driven narratives. I'm more fond of character/worldbuilding/weirdness-driven than plot-driven in general, and I like darkfic. Prompts below are optional--please feel free to follow your own ideas.
This canon is pretty much all about the characters' tangled relationships and I wouldn't mind an extension of that (relationships that are not specifically requested are welcome!). Maybe an exploration what social situation led up to the weirdness we saw in the game?
For the specific relationships I've requested, I'll describe what I like:
The Beast/The Photographer: How dangerous her scenes feel. The Photographer seems safe on the surface, but she's one to gain someone's trust her and then be utterly terrifying and ruthless about it. Pouring alcohol down the Beast as she sputters and chokes. Casually revealing that she knows the Beast is a fake and not actually the Prince as the Beast is pinned underneath her. Blackmailing her for it afterwards. What the fuck is going on with her?
The Swimmer/The Photographer: Conversations about drowning in the Swimmer and hedonism. A smooth front that's good enough to drown in that's full of misdirections. The Photographer being the type of person who would plot with the Swimmer about revenge leading-on The Prince, while knowing that "The Prince" is actually the Beast without telling her. And also going behind the Swimmer's back to get something she wants from the Beast in exchange for possibly falsely-promised emotional revenge after. The Swimmer knowing less and being less observant about her own ex than the Photographer is.
The Boy/The Prince: OH BOY. The Boy taking after the Prince's dresses and Machiavellian tendencies where after turning on the Beast he thinks the Prince would be proud of him for turning out to be as manipulative as he taught him. Whatever relationship they had that led them to that. The Boy being submissive at baseline but taking cues from the Prince to build up a backbone made of manipulation in the worst asshole doormat way possible. And, of course, how they used to smoke weed and kiss in dresses a long time ago.
The Prince/The Photographer: Their styles of manipulation are a bit different: The Prince is ruthless but his charm is all surface level, and strikes me as someone who doesn't know what he's doing and that's why he ended up with so many easily-avoided enemies, while the Photographer has a huge following and is better at not obviously being off-putting. They seem to have a lot of mutual respect and/or detente, which is interesting.

I could make a request for every character in this game and being restricted to four was such a challenge. I would appreciate any character in a fic, including unmentioned ones, if you think they'd be interesting. I also think pre-apocalyptic OCs would be cool!
I love bugs and bug biology, and Hollow Knight's tone and WTF-style humor (looking at you Grubfather and Millibelle and the corpse kitchen and the many, many cannibalism mentions) makes me think it lends itself well to weird bug social customs. (How does a bug survive in a world full of bug-eating?)
Herrah the Beast
Why, ultimately, did she trade her life for having a Hornet? Deepnest fascinates me as it's a civilization of spiders in a world populated by insects, and they sure seem hostile to the rest of Hallownest. They violently resisted the rule of the Pale King, so was it the end times that suggested partnerships? But to leave the entirety of Deepnest in the claws of a young half-wyrm baby? Why? Hornet doesn't seem especially tied down to Deepnest either for all her chasing and trying to kill you.
Mantis Lords
Mantises resist the infection! Why? They attack all that approach with murderous intent but bow to those strong enough to slay their way in and defeat the Lords. I left behind so many sundered mantis parts on my run but they don't seem to mind once I proved myself. What is a Lord to a mantis warrior or a mantis youth? How do they maintain clear minds?
The Pale King
The Pale King seems to have taken his form to be more worldly to the followers, but the ones in the White Palace are disturbingly servile to him. I think it's interesting how other higher beings seem to have created their citizens (like Radiance/moths, Unn/mosskin), but the only things the Pale King seem to have made are some White Palace inhabitants (like the Kingsmould) and the Vessels, while Hallownest citizens seem be ordinary bugs, or at least lack the paleness of his other creations. And several civilizations have had intelligence before his appearance, like the spiders, the mantises, and those outside the Kingdom's Edge, despite the proclamation of "taming our savage souls" in the Elegy to Hallownest.
Soul, which is very related to the Pale King/White Lady through the limitless Kingsoul, seems to have a sinister side with the existence of Soul-warped Follies and Mistakes. Or perhaps the Soul Tyrant's quote of "the answer was in the soul that animates our bodies" implies that they're all related to the Pale King through some form of creation. Or perhaps-- since soul is harvested from still-living bugs and the corpses of bugs, and the Kingsoul is an endless fountain of Soul... could that imply that that's the point of the Pale King's followers, or perhaps he's built up such a bank of Soul that it's considered endless? What role could the Snail Shamans, whose culture seems to be heavily influenced by soul, play? Was Soul something given to bugs or something that always existed or taxed or was it some way to control them? What is the nature of a wyrm's thrall?
The Radiance
Dawning. By the time the game starts, most of the population of Hallownest is dead or turned into zombies. An interesting note is that the style guide said not to include any sun-related time words like "day", because the Radiance represents the sun.
Despite the Seer's idea that "this kingdom was born from [the] betrayal" of forgetting the Radiance... even those that choose to remember/worship the Radiance like the Moss Prophet die once you achieve the Monarch Wings (which also corresponds with the Crossroads becoming infected and the tiny flies transforming into huge explosive glowing demon vultures). Was it trying to defend herself by any means necessary? (Even by spending the lives of those that did remember?)
I'm a bit charmed by her dream nail dialogue as well, with rather readable phrases like "...I DO NOT FEAR YOU..." and "...I WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN..." and "...LET ME BE FREE..." and "...ANCIENT ENEMY..." unlike the grammarless dialogues infected enemies have. Being forgotten seems to be less literal than whether physical, living bugs are there to remember her or not. I wonder what makes a higher being a higher being.
The Seer, last living member of the Moth Tribe, also hands the method to kill the Radiance to the player character as "penitence for old crimes"... I wonder what those crimes could be?
How did bugs react to the infection when it was in its starting stages? How did it spread?

I'm very fond of character-driven narratives. I'm more fond of character/worldbuilding/weirdness-driven than plot-driven in general, and I like darkfic. Prompts below are optional--please feel free to follow your own ideas.
Amaria/Any: Loved the game's contrast of the competent, charismatic, powerful gym leader who bails you out of trouble and the emotional disaster ball who threatens and attempts suicide after she accidentally learns of the secret. Titania who got pressured into starting a relationship she didn't want because Amaria's suicide attempts would have her kill herself otherwise, and the ensuing memory shenanigans meaning that Titania would either have to keep her secret longer or watch Amaria try to kill herself again. Amaria knowing deep down knows that Titania doesn't love her, and still trying to make her stay to the point of attempted murder on her behalf. This canon's stuffed to the brim with characters so having someone else there to Amaria to latch onto, or perhaps make a healthy relationship with, may be interesting...?
Fern/Any: He has an incredible superiority complex and him making the player character beg him was entertaining. I think his speech about Corey being weak and natural selection is especially interesting since you'll spend the entire game wiping the floor with him in every battle. Also, I found everyone hating him amusing, and I'd think it'd be funny to see him try to suffer through a relationship with someone.
Adrienn: Xe is the nicest character in this entire game. I really like how xe encourages the player character in xyr gym battle, and xyr sheer friendliness and enthusiasm at getting you to succeed is a fresh contrast in the game full of miserable people. Adrienn's managed to revitalize an entire city, how will xe handle individual people?

The heroine of the story, and ultimately the one who decides the fate of the friend group (and the entire world). Will they live or die? ... Could things have been different, if it was her and someone else and the end of the world? Could it have been better? (It's hard to imagine it being any worse.)
Teagan Almace
It's hard for me to dislike someone when every other character and the narrative dislikes said person so much. Her preferences get run over a lot, clothes or food or trying to run a performance that won't end the world out of incompetence or not ending the world after the fact. And in the end, even at her worst, Teagan's violence comes from being pushed to that point after getting assaulted by someone trying to force her to listen, rather than as something she's owed by the world.

They're friends... and Alto hates Teagan, but it has to be her. Why? What was their friendship like when they were kids? How did it become the disaster it was in canon? Alto was much more restricted then, so could either of them have behaved differently?
Aubrey Spica
Sad suicidal starchild. It's kind of a shame everyone had to know since maybe it'd been better for them to forget rather than have it immortalized in Uncommon Times, but then again, if it's stuck to their soul, did they ever have a chance? They're just so awful for making everyone they care about worry about them. Don't forget, and don't forget that they're still might be just using Alto, the first warm body that came along. After all-- haven't they worried everyone enough already? That kind of stuff doesn't just go away. They'll have to try extra hard to not worry everyone else to make up for it. Only sticks in their future. But it's okay. It's what they deserve. That's the price for living after trying to die. Maybe... maybe they're not happy about it, but it's never in any meaningful way. They're just petty. They wouldn't dare get into her way. Not with what they've done already. In canon it's out of love. Is it?
I also really appreciate them having dysphoria and their approach to androgyny, just as a side.

To be more connected, like everyone else?
And if they really did fall in love with the first person who'd woke them up... if it could have been anyone, not Alto in particular...

I love the way these three get on together, especially in "That Stands for Pool" and "The Gordon Caper" where all three of them do some really boneheaded things but by their powers combined they're able to fix the situation. I'm not a big fan of "getting together"-type stories--I'd rather the plot be about something else and the relationship serve as the backdrop, if that makes sense.
I'm down for slice of life or shenanigans or hurt/comfort or even a little smut, so long as it's not too graphic (a PG-13 instead of an R, if you will).

I'm a sucker for 1960s sci-fi featuring characters named Jim and their character actor sidekicks who are perfect for me to project onto.
There's so much that I love about these two--I love their banter, I love that they have two very different specialties but lots of respect for the other, I love that they genuinely care about each other. I love that I love that Jim is essentially the world's worst secret agent because everyone knows his name. I love that Artie is a traditional Renaissance man with a slew of different interests (not unlike the actor who played him...). I love that they can't go more than a few months without running into villains they know personally (Loveless, Valentine, Count Manzepi...)
If you want to go the plot route I loved almost all of the early episodes, especially in season two, with Night(s) of the Returning Dead, Man-Eating House, and Lord of Limbo. If you'd rather go slice-of-life, I absolutely love the Wanderer and imagining what it would be like to actually live in when there's not a case/adventure/night-of going on.
I don't mind things turning darker, but I'd rather have, if not a happy ending, then at least a hopeful one.

I love Archie so much. She's sneaky, fat, unapologetic, plays kinda fast and loose with gender roles and people's expectations... she's all the me I could be! I'd love to hear more about the kinds of swindles she was running prior to "River of Teeth."
I was fascinated with the way she and Adelia interacted. The fact that Adelia went to the trouble of making her a knife out of the hippo that killed Neville and that Archie showed some degree of concern/compassion to Adelia even after the group started becoming suspicious of her says a lot to me. This could be a good place for some canon-divergence, or at least some canon-extending so we get to see the two of them together. If you want to extend past the end of the second book and Houndstooth's ranch dream works out, that would be absolutely amazing.

One of the things I love about the pulp version of The Shadow is the fact that there genuinely is no mystical nonsense going on--Allard really is just a guy who's really good at sneaking and shooting. I like his backstory, too--the fact that he fought in the first world war, is an ace pilot, casually befriended a tribe of people and convinced them to back up his story about being a missing person for all those years, it's all really cool compared to the Lamont Cranston story of "Rich guy studies with magical Indians and then does stuff."
I requested the group of Allard and any Xinca because it's fascinating that he was able to just ask these people "Hey, will you pretend I've been here for the last eight years" and they're all "Yeah sure, we've got you." Did they have any motive in any of this, or were they just extremely agreeable? And what about the two who come to New York? Did they want to leave their home? What do they do with themselves when Allard's out running around as Lamont Cranston or The Shadow?
I don't really expect anything from this group because it's awkward that the Xinca are a real people who did really live in Guatemala at the time but it's hard to find any contemporaneous info about them (all I've been able to find is a few partial dictionaries and articles about the Xincas' more modern struggles).
So, I would be perfectly content with just Allard doing his thing, whether that be a casefic or worldbuiilding (how does he keep all those plates spinning, anyway?) or even something more historical like the war years or when he initially went missing.
