Welcome to Fandom 5K nominations, 2022 edition!

Nominations are open over here. We do not have any restrictions on what can be nominated in terms of fandom size, type, and so forth, and we also allow crossovers and original fandoms to be nominated. Please nominate crossover relationships into the Crossover Fandom tag, and original characters and relationships into the Original Work tag.

In terms of how to nominate characters versus relationships, please follow the format below:

• "Character A (fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A on their own. AO3 may suggest a tag to you - please do not use it for nominations and instead nominate as above. Save your mods and help prevent tag migration!
• "Group: Character A/Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B in a ship, inside their own fandom.
• "Group: Character A & Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, inside their own fandom.
• "Group: Character A (Fandom)/Character B (Fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B shipfic, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.
• "Group: Character A (Fandom) & Character B (Fandom)" this means you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.

For complicated franchises, please nominate according to the following guidelines:

• Dragon Age - nominate as "Dragon Age (Video Games)"
• Marvel Cinematic Universe - please only nominate characters who have appeared in the movies into this fandom. We would like your feedback about how you would prefer the film-related TV shows, such as Wandavision and Falcon & the Winter Soldier, to be organized. Please leave a comment if you are interested in those fandoms!
• Marvel Netflix series - these should all be nominated as "Defenders (TV)"
• Star Wars - please nominate in terms of "Star Wars Prequel Trilogy", "Star Wars Original Trilogy", "Star Wars Sequel Trilogy" etc.
• X-Men films - as "X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies)" and "X-Men (Original Timeline Movies)"
• Arrowverse - use "DC's Arrowverse" for Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow and Superman & Lois
• Marvel and DC Comics - as "Marvel (Comics)" and "DC Comics"

We are not familiar with every fandom, so we will be taking guidance from you as to how your fandoms work in terms of fandom tags, etc. Please watch this space for queries!

I think the Marvel TV series could be considered part of the MCU properly/the movieverse, because the plotlines and characters of the shows directly affect the content of the movies and vice-versa. Like WandaVision is the direct lead-in to the next Doctor Strange, TFATWS is Captain America 3.5, etc.

I find it becomes a bit complicated and convoluted when the shows that are very heavily tied to the movies are separated out.

I prefer keeping the MCU TV shows separate simply because it's another medium and even though there's continuity, I think there are plenty of people who are only interested in the shows and not the movies or vice versa, and someone who wanted to offer or request, say, Bucky Barnes for Falcon & the Winter Soldier might not be interested in or comfortable with making general MCU Bucky offer or request.

It gets a little confusing to put everything together, especially with the multiverses. Some people just want fic about the Loki show, while others are still only interested in original Loki. Keeping stuff separate helps to keep it easier to request.

But Bucky in TFATWS is literally the same character in the same universe and timeline as MCU Movie Bucky? He's the same guy. It's not even debatable like Loki from Loki, since he's in a different dimension. Bucky in TFATWS is just MCU Bucky.

No one is arguing that TFATWS!Bucky is a totally different character. But the audience for TFATWS and the MCU movies isn't the same and people who only or mostly like the show might just want to request and offer TFATWS fic specifically.

Like, Picard from Star Trek: Picard and Picard from TNG are also the same character, but the shows are still nominated as stand-alone shows rather than smushing them into a giant umbrella fandom.

It doesn't affect me too much personally, since the things I would request are very clearly show canon (like Yelena/Kate), but I think it makes sense to have them separate just to make sure people can offer/request what they want, especially since these are longer fics than most exchanges. Like if someone really is hoping for an exploration of Bucky/Sam during Falcon & the Winter Soldier and then gets matched to someone who has only seen the movies, neither person will be happy.

But whatever is decided, I would like to add that I would really prefer if at the very least the What If ... TV series could be separate, since those are the same but very specific versions of characters and I don't know how to distinguish that clearly if everything is just under MCU.

Thanks for asking! We're going to say no for this exchange, as that type of request seems more suited to exchanges that do freeform trope matching, where both recipient and creator know they're both interested in a selected trope. Without that common interest, we're not sure it would result in specific enough matches.

DA It wouldn't be that different from Original Works if the nominations followed the same format as OW. Like, 'Superhero Female Character', and so on. The genre covers the trope aspect, I think, and anyone requesting or offering CCoF knows what they're signing up for. I really hope you reconsider, but if your decision is final, then no problem! It looks as though you're using the Character nominations slot, but you're approving characters as "Character: Name" rather than just "Name" (Name is what you indicate in the instructions above.)

Could you please clarify what the intention is here? Is it to keep characters and groups in separate parts of the list? My understanding is that tagset moderators usually avoid putting a prefix on a tag that matches the slot it's actually in, because that means that that string can't then be accepted into, say, the relationship field for a different exchange that is using the relationship field and also needs to distinguish between relationships and single characters. Ie: if you accept "Character: Harry Potter" as a tag in the Character field, another exchange can't say "We're using the Relationships field, please preface all characters with "Character: " because the tag will then change to "Character: Harry Potter - character".

It's also a silent change from the 2020 and 2019 tag sets, where solo characters were accepted just with their names, no prefix.

How would you prefer we nominate shows and their spin-offs? As separate shows or as a (Show) Universe fandom?
eg. Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel

Hi! Combining these under Buffyverse often works well and is a little easier for us, but if you prefer to separate the subfandoms, that's also okay by the mods. Currently, we have no nominations for that 'verse.

I'm glad to see the Marvel Netflix series kept mostly separate (as someone who often requests/offers Iron Fist characters).

While I understand the argument for keeping the MCU all one category, I would personally prefer keeping the TV shows separate for those who are interested in requesting/offering characters/pairings specific to the shows themselves. Especially now that they're using multiple versions of characters, like how the main Loki of Loki isn't the same Loki as in the movies, etc.

Related question but DCEU-flavored: I'd like to nominate Peacemaker, should I do so as the standalone show?

Thanks - once the Marvel shows were deemed separate, I figured the same rule would apply to the DCEU and nominated it as a standalone.

I don't know if you care about this, but for Group: Eddie Diaz (9-1-1)/Frank Adler (Gifted 2017) there is both a Gifted 2017 movie and a Gifted 2017 TV show. They are completely unrelated. The show is an X-Men adaptation.

The show is actually called *The* Gifted, while the movie is just Gifted. Frank Adler is from the movie, so the tag is correct as shown :)

Not a F5K mod, but individual exchange moderators can't move tags between categories. The tag will appear under its correct media type once the tag has been processed by the Archive's tag wrangler volunteers.

I nominated Ella Enchanted, and I noticed that at this point it's still sitting while the rest of my nominations are approved. I nominated it with the "All Media Types" form of the tag because that's what I've seen in previous exchanges I've participated in, but would you prefer that I specifically nominate the novel or the film depending on my preference?

Yes, that's fine, as long as it's clear who you'd be referring to! We'd also recommend making it clear whether you're referring to original or canonical characters, if there's any potential ambiguity. For example: "Thor & Any Canonical Asgardian(s)" or "Thor & Original Asgardian(s)".
