Welcome to Fandom 5K nominations, 2019 edition!

Nominations are open over here. We do not have any restrictions on what can be nominated in terms of fandom size, type, and so forth, and we also allow crossovers and original fandoms to be nominated. Please nominate crossover relationships into the Crossover Fandoms tag, and original characters and relationships into the Original Work tag.

In terms of how to nominate characters versus relationships, please follow the format below:
  • "Character A (fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A on their own. AO3 may suggest a tag to you - please do not use it for nominations and instead nominate as above. Save your mods and help prevent tag migration!
  • "Group: Character A/Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B in a ship, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A & Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom)/Character B (Fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B shipfic, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom) & Character B (Fandom)" this means you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.

We are not familiar with every fandom, so we will be taking guidance from you as to how your fandoms work in terms of fandom tags, etc. Please watch this space for queries!

Can you talk about how you're breaking down the MCU? Is everything included under "MCU," including Agent Carter, the Netflix shows, etc? Or is it MCU + individual shows? What about the subfranchises, like Thor, Black Panther, etc?
Wednesday, March 13th, 2019 03:29 pm (UTC)
I put all of my nominations under MCU as a whole because if we start separating them out by subfranchises we're going to end up with A LOT of potential crossover relationships. Steve Rogers/Tony Stark would technically be a crossover if we separated the Captain America and Iron Man subfranchises, so I feel like keeping it all in under the big MCU heading--at least with the movies--is probably a good idea.

I don't write for any of the shows, though, so I'm not sure I can speak to which logic should probably be used there. Maybe those considerations should take into account what kind of relationships are going to be used? For instance, if the only relationships that are going to be nominated for the Netflix shows are exclusive to those shows it might be best to keep them separate, but if relationships are going to include movie characters they'd need to go under the umbrella.

The counterargument is that many of the individual franchises have little or nothing to do with each other, and so it makes sense that ships between those franchises make sense as crossovers. Or they could do what Unusual Bearings did, and had an Avengers fandom in addition to Black Panther, Thor, etc. That's why I'd like to hear from the mods on the topic.

I do think that since individual characters/relationships are being requested, having a gazillion subfandoms would be frustrating if you also want to request or offer non-MCU fandoms. (If fandoms were split, to cover all the ships and characters I want I'd have to request Agent Carter, Avengers, Black Panther, Captain America, Jessica Jones, and Thor, with one or two relationships in each fandom. I don't mind splitting up TV shows from movies (and even splitting by TV shows), but splitting up each and every subfranchise seems unnecessarily nitpicky because there's so much overlap in the MCU.

But yeah, I'm waiting on the mods to weigh in before I nominate.

Our view at this stage is that the MCU is the movies, and that last year we accepted individual television shows. If you would like the shows dealt with differently, now is the time to let us know!

Since Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher and hence also The Defenders are very closely tied together I'd like to suggest to put them together under something like Marvel Netflix TV.
Friday, March 15th, 2019 01:32 am (UTC)
I suggest using them all in the MCU. People who say want to nom Steve Rogers & Matt Murdock can use that as part of the MCU instead of a crossover, and they can fill up the nom section better.

I would like to ask a similar clarifying question to the one above, but about comics.

Is it okay to nominate specific titles or should I nominate by publisher and try to disambiguate specific versions of the characters as necessary?
Wednesday, March 13th, 2019 08:17 pm (UTC)
At this stage we'll accept both, unless we're persuaded that one or the other should be done.

At this point I think it's best to keep everything under the DCU (comics) umbrella, to be honest. You have Midnighter/Apollo listed under the Midnighter and Apollo (Comics) fandom when this pairing actually appears in multiple titles and breaking it up like this is confusing and goes against what I see in most exchanges (with the exception of Yuletide where DCU (comics) is too large a fandom to qualify).

I've nominated quite a few DCU ships where the pairing appears across multiple titles so to tie them to a particular book would be very limiting and cause confusion; for example, should Bruce Wayne/Clark Kent be nominated under Batman (comics) or Superman (comics)? Sticking to the umbrella fandom makes it much easier to search for requests; I know I would overlook a request for Midnighter/Apollo if it were listed under Midnighter and Apollo (comics) because I would be expecting to see it under DCU (comics).

There’s “Crossover Fandom” and “crossover fandoms” listed in the tagset, currently with 0 pairings in either. We should use the former, right?

Something weird is going on with my Doctor Who nominations: https://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/2915/nominations/104237 (the ship that was approved but cut off is supposed to be group: Jack Harkness/the Doctor). Help?

I think you were approving my nominations while I was editing them and now "Group: Male Retired Supervillain/Male Inexperienced Superhero Who Seeking Him Out To Ask for Advice" is approved under Unassociated Characters & Relationships. You can delete that one because it's missing a word and in the meantime you already approved the correct version ("Group: Male Retired Supervillain/Male Inexperienced Superhero Who Keeps Asking Him For Advice") under Original Work.

Sorry about the confusion!

Four OW relationships have gone through without 'Group' included:

Female Plant Mage whose feelings make things grow/female water mage who helps water plants

Female Witch Hermit/Dashing Female Outlaw She Helps Hide

Female Witch who comes home as different animals/her increasingly (affectionately) exasperated wife

Pirate Queen/nerdy female stoway who is good at writing smut

The last one also should be 'stowaway'.

As amended:

Group: Female Plant Mage whose feelings make things grow/female water mage who helps water plants

Group: Female Witch Hermit/Dashing Female Outlaw She Helps Hide

Group: Female Witch who comes home as different animals/her increasingly (affectionately) exasperated wife

Group: Pirate Queen/nerdy female stowaway who is good at writing smut

This has all been fixed up except for "Group: Female Witch who comes home as different animals/her increasingly (affectionately) exasperated wife". That has had to go through as "Group: Witch who comes home as different animals/her increasingly (affectionately) exasperated wife" because we're limited to 100 characters for a tag.

Thank you for that, and for also putting what the tag should be as well; that makes it much easier for us!

I don't know how particular you're being with spellings, but The Pacific currently has "Group: Sledge/Snafu" and should probably have their full names from the tags, which would be "Group: Merriell "Snafu" Shelton/Eugene Sledge"

I honestly don't know how relevant this is, but Christine (1983) should be under Movies. *shrug*

Unfortunately, AO3 exchange moderators cannot change the category that fandoms appear under in a tag set unless they are also members of the AO3 wrangling staff.

Gotcha! Makes sense. :)
Friday, March 15th, 2019 09:08 pm (UTC)
Unfortunately we can't change fandom categories - that's only something AO3 tag wrangers can do.

I have a question concerning genres (and wasn't quite sure where else to ask it). One of my fandoms, Assassin's Creed, has an adventurous relationship with timelines. The Assassins and Templars in the present access the memories of Assassins and Templars who lived in the past, but in all times, Assassins and Templars exist.

The historical characters (all except one) stay in their respective times in the games and live and die there. Now I have been thinking of requesting Modern AUs with them, where they are reincarnated/simply born later. If I do that, though, I'd still want them to be, well, modern Templars and Assassins, not modern coffee shop employees, as the tag suggests. Is Modern AU the right genre for that still, or would that be, idk, Canon Divergence maybe?
Sunday, March 17th, 2019 05:09 am (UTC)
Yeah, I mean I am mostly going to choose almost every genre anyway since my prompts are usually pretty broad (and too many, lol). I might just not tick Modern AU in that case since I do habitually DNW high school/college and coffee shop AUs (even though I'm fine with every other kind) and just give some prompts in that direction?

Just a small matter, but the "AO3 Profile" link in the community's sidebar still leads to the 2018 collection instead of the 2019 one.

Just glancing through the DC Extended Universe nominations, there's a duplicate - "Group: Diana (Wonder Woman)/Mera (DCEU)" and "Group: Diana/Mera" are the same pairing!

I noticed some misspellings for The Magnus Archives, and a misspelling which also resulted in a duplicate.

Group: Jonathan Simms/Elias Bouchard
Group: Jonathan Simms/Elias Bouchard/Martin Blackwood
Jonathan Simms (The Magnus Archives)

It should be Jonathan Sims. For the character tag, it's also already approved with the correct spelling.

There's also a duplicate for a ship tag.

Group: Martin Blackwood/Peter Lukas
Group: Martin Blackwood (The Magnus Archives)/Peter Lukas (The Magnus Archives)

Hello! Under A Single Man (2009) - Can George Falconer & Hank be changed to George Falconer & Harold Ackerley? I got his name wrong and someone reminded me, thank you!

In 僕のヒーローアカデミア | Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia nominations there are two ships without the "Group:" at the beginning - Katsuki Bakugo/Uraraka Ochako Katsuki and Bakugo/Uraraka Ochako/Midoriya Izuku. I hoped to request one of them, so I wouldn't want them to end up outside of the tagset because they were wrongly formated. Is this something you can fix on your end as mods or do I need to nominate the desired ship myself in proper format?

My nomination of "DC's Arrowverse" was automatically changed to "Arrow (TV 2012)" when I submitted it.
