Welcome to Fandom 5K nominations, 2021 edition!

Nominations are open over here. We do not have any restrictions on what can be nominated in terms of fandom size, type, and so forth, and we also allow crossovers and original fandoms to be nominated. Please nominate crossover relationships into the Crossover Fandom tag, and original characters and relationships into the Original Work tag.

In terms of how to nominate characters versus relationships, please follow the format below:
  • "Character A (fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A on their own. AO3 may suggest a tag to you - please do not use it for nominations and instead nominate as above. Save your mods and help prevent tag migration!
  • "Group: Character A/Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B in a ship, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A & Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom)/Character B (Fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B shipfic, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom) & Character B (Fandom)" this means you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.

For complicated franchises, please nominate according to the following guidelines:
  • Dragon Age - nominate as "Dragon Age (Video Games)"
  • Marvel Cinematic Universe - please only nominate characters who have appeared in the movies into this fandom
  • Marvel Netflix series - these should all be nominated as "Defenders (TV)"
  • Star Wars - please nominate in terms of "Star Wars Prequel Trilogy", "Star Wars Original Trilogy", "Star Wars Sequel Trilogy" etc.
  • X-Men films - as "X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies)" and "X-Men (Original Timeline Movies)"
  • Arrowverse - use "DC's Arrowverse" for Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow and Superman & Lois
  • Marvel and DC Comics - as "Marvel (Comics)" and "DC Comics"

We are not familiar with every fandom, so we will be taking guidance from you as to how your fandoms work in terms of fandom tags, etc. Please watch this space for queries!

For franchises with adaptations, how do we disambiguate characters nominated within their own canon when they have distinct personalities?

eg. Good Omens (Radio)
Aziraphale (Good Omens Radio)/Crowley (Good Omens Radio) OR Aziraphale/Crowley (Good Omens Radio)

or Starksy & Hutch TV vs movie, etc.

Sorry if it's an inane question, just want to save you editing after the fact.

I would like to nominate Wonder Woman in the Hades world, but I don't know how to do that since I don't have a preference whom she interacts with

Hey, my nomination of Group: Kara Danvers (Arrowverse)/Peter Maximoff (MCU) was a typo. It should be Group: Kara Danvers (Arrowverse)/Peter Maximoff (ATM). Sorry about that.

I accidentally spelled Sam winchesters last name wrong, lol. I put WInchester instead of Winchester. Can y’all please fix it? It’s in the supernatural Lucifer/Sam Winchester tag. Thanks!

Hi! For the Star Wars Legends universe (the old EU), which contains books, comics, video games, and more, how would you like us to nominate it? I've seen other exchanges use Star Wars Legends - All Media Types, but wanted to check with you before I nominated.

Thanks for asking! We've started a post for this one, since it seems like there might be some discussion needed:

Hi! I have a question about crossover nominations.

If I'm asking for a number of characters from one fandom and a number from another, do I need to include the (fandom) after each one or can I group them such as:

A & B & C (Fandom One) & D & E & F (Fandom Two).

Thank you :)

Under Star Wars: Rebels, the same ship was nominated twice, once as "Group: Alexsandr Kallus/Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios" and the other time as "Group: Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios/Alexsandr Kallus". I believe the first one is correct!

I want to nominate the 'extra' A Song of Ice and Fire books, which are all set in one universe and most of them contributing to the same story. Would something like 'Non-Main Series ASoIaF books' be okay, or should I nominate under the general 'A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms' tag?
Sunday, March 21st, 2021 02:24 am (UTC)
Interesting question! Let's not go with the "Related Fandoms" tag, because we want to keep the ASOIF novels and the GoT show distinct from one another. These are Westeros novels and novellas that aren't strictly in the ASOIF series, correct? Dunk and Egg, the Targaryen history, and a handful of other novellas, or are you thinking a subset of those?

So there are a lot of individual dramas and books and various assorted chapters and extras posted online for the Dao Mu Bi Ji | The Grave Robber's Chronicles universe. Is there a way I should nominate it if I want a character from one of the dramas (arguably in the book too, but we only find out a lot about his characterization in the drama) and but another character from the books/a different drama? Would that be 盗墓笔记 | The Grave Robber's Chronicles - All Media Types? Or do I have to nominate each of the drama series and the books series separately?
Saturday, March 20th, 2021 11:13 pm (UTC)
There are cases where we would try to avoid All Media Types, for canons with widely different adaptations and reboots, but there are others with a closely shared universe, characterization, and plot where it makes sense to combine them, and we'd defer to the fanbase in that case! If you think it makes the most sense to consider it the same fandom, feel free to nominate with the tag you suggested. If there are follow-up questions from other interested participants, we'll address them in a tagset clarifications post.

Hi! How are you handling the Snyder Cut of Justice League? Are we putting that under DCEU as well? Just wanted to make sure! Thanks!

Should the Disney Plus Marvel shows be nominated under general MCU or individually? Some of the characters appear in the movies and some don't.
Monday, March 22nd, 2021 11:39 pm (UTC)
We've gone with MCU since so many of the characters appear in both, but I don't think we currently have any nominations of characters that aren't in the films, so if there's a general preference otherwise, please let us know!

For pairings that contain characters from different parts of the Star Wars franchise, do you want them under crossover fandom, star wars AMT or something else?

Do you allow nominations like teen!character and adult!character when the canon has time travel and we meet both versions? They're essentially the same character but from different eras. I'm mainly interested in the teen version, so requesting the character and stating my preference and then hoping I get the preferred version wouldn't work for me.

This is something that comes up a couple of times for my nominations, and I really hope I can explain this properly, because I'm terrible at that. :)

I want to nominate groups, but the standard way the individual character tags on AO3 are is needlessly complicated, namely: somewhere along the line, the basic names got descriptors added so that nowadays, when you're listing characters, in the LOTR fandoms for example, instead of just Boromir, Faramir, Celeborn it's:
Boromir (Son of Denethor II)
Faramir (Son of Denethor II)
Celeborn (Tolkien)

So, if my nominations are for
Group: Boromir (Son of Denethor II)/Faramir (Son of Denethor II)
Group: Celeborn (Tolkien)/Haldir of Lothlórien
... that's just confusing with the formatting for this exchange, right? Because obviously they're in the same fandom, and those aren't fandoms in the brackets. Should I therefore, for clarity's sake, just make my nominations:
Group: Boromir/Faramir
Group: Celeborn/Haldir of Lothlórien
Sunday, March 21st, 2021 11:27 pm (UTC)
Yes, that's totally fine, and probably preferable to anyone looking through the tagset. :) As long as there's no ambiguity, feel free to leave out the character's title, etc.

The "Tolkien" is useful if we need to distinguish film vs. book nominations, but that's much more important with individual character nominations, since those often have automatic links to one or both fandom tags.

Same pairing listed twice under “Deus Ex (Video Games)”.

Group: Adam Jensen/James Miller
Group: Adam Jensen/Jim Miller

James and Jim are the same person. How name is James “Jim” Miller. The canonical tag the fandom uses is: Jim Miller.

I asked this in reply to the old sticky post. *facepalms* Probably makes more sense here.

I'm 100% sure about 3 of my nominations, but I'm not yet sure what to pick for the 4th spot. Could I get those first 3 nominations in and add a 4th one later, even once the first 3 are probably already approved?
Wednesday, March 24th, 2021 03:17 am (UTC)
No worries. :) Yes, that's fine! The individual tags (fandom and character/relationships) may be edited in the form until one of us has approved those tags, but as long as you still have slots left on the form, you can keep adding new tags, whether that's a fourth character on one of your existing fandoms or a fourth fandom.
