Nominations are open for a little under a week more! They will close at 11:59 PM EDT on Thursday, 22 March. What time is that for me?

Tag Set Clarifications

There are over 300 fandoms already in the tag set. If tags are misspelled, associated to the wrong fandom, somehow ambiguous, or otherwise incorrect, please let us know!

We have a specific questions below the cut. If you're the nominator for these fandoms, please provide a link to your nomination form.

1) Crossover Fandom - Group: Loki (MCU)/Eliot Waugh (Magicians)

Is this Eliot from the books or the TV series?

2) The Hobbit - Tolkien - Group: Legolas & Thranduil

Does Legolas appear in the Hobbit? Should this be nominated in Lord of the Rings?

3) Critical Role

There are nominations including characters from both campaigns. Should these be split into two fandoms or grouped together?

4) Dangan Ronpa AMT

Should these be split into Hope's Peak Arc and New DR3 arc, or should they be grouped as a single fandom?

5) W.I.T.C.H.

This was nominated without characters or relationships. If you want to offer or request it, please add some, or it won't be available in the signup form!

6) Song of Ice and Fire

Currently there are tags under A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms and other tags under A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin. Would the nominators prefer to combine these into a single fandom or keep the books and TV show separate? If they should be separate, can the nominator of the Related Fandoms tags clarify if they want the books or TV?

Genre Tags

Fandom 5K does not match on specific tropes, but we do use genre tags to do the following things:
  • Try to prioritize matching between participants whose tastes are broadly compatible
  • Provide some additional detail for authors who match to a request without prompts or a letter

With that in mind, we want to keep the genre tags at a high level and make them as simple as possible. Please let us know if they need any clarification!

So far, the only thing that has changed from last year is that we changed AU - SciFi/Fantasy Elements to SciFi/Fantasy. This can be used if you're interested in (for example) Harry Potter fic with an emphasis on magic, or Yuuri!!! on Ice aboard a spaceship, or an original work about the first lesbian president of an alchemist's society.

We've also been asked to add a Horror tag and are still considering that change. We agree not all Darkfic is Horror, but Horror fic could probably all be categorized as Darkfic. Can you suggest a way to rename these so Horror isn't a subset of Darkfic?

For reference, these are the current genre tags:

  • Action/Adventure
  • Angst
  • AU - Canon Divergence
  • AU - Genre Shift
  • AU - Modern
  • Canon-Style Plot
  • Character Development
  • Darkfic
  • Established Relationship
  • Fix-it fic
  • Fluff
  • Getting Together
  • Humor
  • Hurt/Comfort
  • Interpersonal Drama
  • Mystery/Procedural
  • Sci-fi/fantasy
  • Slice of Life
  • Smut
  • Worldbuilding

I haven't filled out my nominations yet but I absolutely do not want A Song of Ice and Fire - George R.R. Martin to be combined with Game of Thrones (TV).

Agreed. It would not make sense.

Both the Loki/Eliot and Bucky/Eliot nominations are mine. I would like the TV show, please!

Those should be amended now!

Not the nominator, but Legolas was only in the Hobbit movies and not the book.

Maybe replace Darkfic with something like Dark But Not Horror? It isn't exactly catchy, but it would communicate the category's intended meaning.
Saturday, March 17th, 2018 04:43 pm (UTC)
Can we have some type of AU tag to replace the AU - Scifi/Fantasy tag? Most of my canons are already Scifi/Fantasy. I love AUs but there is now no way for me to specify non-mundane AUs for those canons. I can just use the Scifi/Fantasy tag but it could cause issues as I would specify that I only want that for Scifi/Fantasy AUs and not focus on the canon Scifi/Fantasy elements.

I'd like the Darkfic tag to remain unchanged.

I thought the Genre Shift tag was for non-mundane AUs (including fantasy/sci-fi one’s, and you specify in optional details what kind of non-mundane AU you like). That’s what I was planning to use it for.

It would help to have a glossary with a few examples of each tag, like we’re given in this post for sci-fi/fantasy.
Sunday, March 18th, 2018 12:42 am (UTC)
If it is already scifi/fantasy and I want a different type of scifi/fantasy AU then the genre shift tag doesn't help. For example Sailor Moon is already scifi/fantasy. If I was interested in AUs like a high fantasy AU or a spaceship AU I could do AU - Scifi/Fantasy. AU - Genre Shift could be to any genre including mundane ones while the Scifi/Fantasy tag could lead to people who want to explore the already canon scifi/fantasy elements.

Legolas isn't on page in the Hobbit but would definitely have been living there during it, and present in the battles. I'd nommed him there because I wanted to request Hobbit era father and son fic rather than LOTR era. I don't know.

But if we're allowed to do that with characters who were not on the page, that would negate the point of nominations of characters since there were so many other characters that would have been alive during that same time but were not "on page" in the actual book as per Tolkien.

What would be the parameters of this as it could apply to every other fandom and character as well and could get unwieldy?

I've seen it ruled on both ways, I'm okay with whatever the mods decide.

It's not my fandom, but I wonder which Thunderbirds is meant here? I ask because disambiguating them is often a pain in Yuletide.

One of the Critical Role nominators -- I think it'd make sense to keep the two campaigns separate, since at this point they might as well be different canons.
Sunday, March 18th, 2018 08:09 pm (UTC)
We have created two separate fandoms now for Critical Role:
Critical Role (Tal'Dorei Campaign)
Critical Role (Wildemount Campaign)

Could I ask you to move your nominations into the Tal'Dorei fandom tag? Thank you!

Done, and thank you!
Saturday, March 17th, 2018 11:51 pm (UTC)
I'm not the nominator for either of these, but is "Group: Diana (DCU)/Okoye (MCU)" and "Group: Okoye (MCU)/Diana (Wonder Woman)" appreciably different? If the nominator of the second one meant Diana from the comics, then absolutely ignore this.

Also, the Voldemort character tag in Harry Potter is missing the "r."
Sunday, March 18th, 2018 07:55 pm (UTC)
I have fixed up the Voldemort tag, and we'll raise the question about the Diana/Okoye tag in the next post!

Awesome, thank you!

One of the Dangan Ronpa nominators here - I’m fine with Hope’s Peak arc & NDRV3 arc being split up - it would make sense, and I know other exhanges have done it that way. I just nominated mine under All Media Types because that’s what had already been nominated. (My nominations: https://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/2310/nominations/78195 )

I’m not one of the ASOIAF nominators but I would not want ASOIAF books to be combined with GoT (TV). The canons have diverged to the point of being wildly different and should definitely not be treated as the same fandom.
Sunday, March 18th, 2018 08:06 pm (UTC)
Yours is the one we haven't approved yet, so that's helpful! What we would like you to do is to use another one of your nominations to nominate either the NDRv3 characters under the tag "Dangan Ronpa (v3 Arc)" or the Ultimate Imposter under "Dangan Ronpa (Hope's Peak Arc)". We are aware that you won't be able to change your current fandom tag, so we can fix that up at our end, but we do need you to shuffle your nomination around first.

Thanks!
Monday, March 19th, 2018 03:56 pm (UTC)
Have shuffled around my nominations, and... Ao3 hiccuped or something, because after some shuffling it did let me change my fandom tag. Maybe because it says “Dangan Ronpa (Hope’s Peak Arc)” is a synonym of the canonical tag “Dangan Ronpa - All Media Types” ? I don’t know. I’m too fever-addled to figure this out. Let me know if there’s anything else I need to do on my end.

Not the nominator, but...

The James Bond (Craig movies) are now under Books & Literature and Star Trek: The Original Series is under Other Media.
Sunday, March 18th, 2018 07:46 pm (UTC)
I'm afraid we can't do anything about that. That's a tag wrangling issue with AO3 and neither of us are tag wranglers.

There are duplicates in Star Wars: Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types. There's a group version and a non-group version.
