That's all for another year! Author names are now revealed, but you can keep reading, enjoying, and commenting on stories in the archive.

A huge thank you to everyone who signed up, beta read, and pinch hit!

Both the Fandom 5K collection and Fandom Couch are open for treats and make-up assignments, and they'll stay open until signups begin next year. Please put all works longer than 5k into the Fandom 5k collection and works that are not quite 5k into the Fandom Couch collection.

If you defaulted after the no-fault deadline of 4 May but wish to participate in the next round, you'll need to fulfill your original assignment before then. Please drop us an email at fandom5kmod AT gmail when you do. If you're not sure whether this applies to you, please email us to ask. This does still apply if you defaulted late in the 2017 round and have not yet completed a makeup assignment.

Thanks again, keep reading and commenting, and watch this space early next year for details on the 2019 round!

The archives are live!

Fandom 5K
Fandom Couch

Thank you to everyone, and an especial thank you for the pinch hitters who went above and beyond under tight timeframes to get longfic written. This exchange would not have succeeded without you.

Now, go forth, read, and enjoy!

The deadline has passed!

If you do not have a gift there are several possibilities:
1. Your author defaulted and you are one of the pinch hits below;
2. Your author obtained an extension and will be turning in their story in the near future;
3. You and your author both defaulted, and so you will not be going out to pinch hit.

We are happy to let you know which category you fall into, so please email us if you want to know. The archive will remain closed until all pinch hits are filled, so we may not be opening on time. Please do not fret; the exchange will open when everyone who turned in a story has a gift!

So far, we have seven pinch hits (five post deadline and two reposts). These are due at 11:59pm on 11 June 2018. There may be more coming over the next few days due to extensions, so please also keep an eye out for those

Please comment below with the pinch hit number and your AO3 name if you are able to pick up any of these pinch hits. All comments are screened.

The mandatory check-in period is upon us!

Please reply to this post by 11:59 PM EDT on 12 May. What time is that for me?

If you do not reply to this post by 12 May, you will be defaulted automatically. Please do respond either way, though, so we know as early as possible if you need to back out!

If you have taken a pinch hit (thank you!), please leave one comment for your original assignment and a separate comment for your pinch hit. That will make tracking easier for us.

All replies to this post are screened. We plan to hold resultant pinch hits until the end of the check-in period, so keep an eye out on 13 May!

Willing to offer beta services, check a story for canon compliance, or help cheerlead someone through the Fandom 5K writing process? Can you help as a subject matter expert for a language, location, or specialized area of knowledge? Fill out this Google Form to add your name to the list! You can specify what type of services you're offering, which fandoms you're interested in, and whether there's any content you're unwilling to read.

Looking for a beta reader, canon compliance checker, or someone to cheerlead you and help brainstorm plot ideas? You can find the list of offers here.

All form responses will go to the Raw Form Responses tab automatically. I’ll convert these to a more readable format on the other tabs, but that might take a little time.

[personal profile] kate_nepveu was kind enough to let me copy and modify the template she uses for Yuletide beta offers. Please let me know if there are any issues with the form or the spreadsheet.

Matching is done and assignments are out! We did not have anyone who was asked to add a fandom and we were able to match on fandoms, characters/ships, and genre tags. Congratulations everyone! If there is a problem with your assignment, please let us know at fandom5kmod@gmail.com. We can't fix your problem if we don't know what it is!

A spreadsheet of requests will be coming out shortly, but first up, pinch hits!

We do have fifteen initial pinch hits. These are not due to anyone defaulting but instead due to the matching algorithm. If you are interested in claiming these, please comment to this post with the pinch hit you wish to claim and your AO3 name. All comments are screened!

EDIT: We have a sixteenth pinch hit! Same principles above apply for picking it up!

Signups will close in just over 24 hours! Here's a countdown.

The signup summary has been updated.

I will probably not update the signup summary tomorrow, but keep in mind the best way to see if you can match to one or more recipients is to look at the requests.

If everyone is matchable, we should be able to send out assignments shortly after signups close. If some people's offers can't be matched to recipients, we'll get in touch with them to add offers.

There are 98 of you so far--can we break 100?

We’re about halfway through signups! They will close on 7 April at 11:59 PM, EST. Here is a countdown!

You can see all the requests in detail here, or you can try to view a summary of the offered and requested fandoms.

Unfortunately, there is a known AO3 issue with loading the offered and requested fandoms. Some people have been able to load it after refreshing multiple times. I'll be updating this spreadsheet with a printout as frequently as I'm able to load it myself. The last time was on Wednesday of last week.

The detailed list of requests is still working.

If, when signups close, none of your offers match any of the requests, we’ll contact you by email and ask you to add fandoms or characters/relationships to your offer. You can keep an eye on the requests to be sure you’re matchable.

Signups are open here! Go forth and request fic!

As you do, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the rules and the FAQ. Please let us know if they need any clarification. You can comment here or shoot us an email if you have any questions.

There are more details at the FAQ, but here are the basics:

You’ll request between 4 and 10 fandoms, with between 1 and 20 characters or relationships and between 3 and 20 genre tags per fandom.

You’ll offer between 5 and 10 fandoms, with between 1 and 20 characters or relationships and 3 and 20 genre tags per fandom.

Characters and relationships will both be in the Characters field, and you’ll receive a story focused on any one of the items you select in that field.

If you'd like a story about Character A, select Character A in this field. If you'd like a story about either Character A or Character B, select Character A, then select Character B.

If you'd like a story about Character A and Character B in a romantic or sexual relationship, select Group: Character A/Character B. If you'd like a story about Character A and Character B in a gen relationship, select Group: Character A & Character B.

You'll be matched to a recipient who requested at least one of your offered fandoms and at least one of the offered characters or relationships in that fandom. However, you can choose to write a story in any one of your recipient’s requested fandoms, focused on any one of the items (character or relationship) they requested for that fandom, even if you didn’t offer it.

The genres in the Additional Tags are intended to give a general sense of what kind of story you’d like to read or write for a given fandom. We’re going to attempt to assign offers and requests that share a genre. If that results in too many initial pinch hits, AO3’s matching code will still prioritize matches by genre.

Here is the full tag set!

Almost ready to open signups! Please continue to let us know if you see any errors in the tag set.

One fandom, Fiddler on the Roof (1971), has no characters or relationships associated, which means it won't be available to offer or request. If you nominated that fandom and think the characters were deleted in error, please send us a link to your nomination page! There are relationships associated to the theatrical version.

For those interested in Original Works and Crossover Fandom tags, I've created a filterable spreadsheet for each that might help with finding tags you can offer or request.

Please let me know if there are errors! There was a lot of copy/paste, and some of the tags are ambiguous.
Friday, March 23rd, 2018 04:25 am
The tagset is closed! We have 2,550 characters and relationships nominated across 486 fandoms, which is larger than last year! Well done, everyone!

You will also notice that we now have 21 genre tags rather than 20. The sharp eyed among you have undoubtedly already noticed, but Horror is in the tagset as well as Darkfic!

Please look over the tagset and let us know if there are any typographical errors, any duplicate tags and the like so we can fix it! If your fandom is in the wrong media section, that is something we have no control over so we're sorry in advance about that.

Otherwise, peruse the tagset, plan your requests and offers, and get excited! Signups open 24 March! It's going to be awesome.
Wednesday, March 21st, 2018 11:13 pm
First, there is just over a day left for nominations! They close Thursday, 22 March at 11:59 PM EDT.

What time is that for me?

Second, we are still waiting to hear from people who made the following nominations:

A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms - we have approved nominations for the books and the TV show, and we want to move your tags into one of the two to avoid ambiguity. Which media type do you want?

Characters - Group: Jaime Lannister/Sansa Stark Group: Sansa Stark/Jon Snow Jaime Lannister (A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms) Sansa Stark (A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms)

Chronicles of Narnia - All Media Types - based on the characters nominated, we assume you mean the books rather than another adaptation, but please comment to clarify!

No Fandom - these four crossovers, not yet approved, need to be nominated under Crossover Fandom. Please update your nomination

The Lord of the Rings - All Media Types - are you interested in the books or the movies?

Grayson (Comics) - do you want this to be its own fandom or combined with the larger DCU fandom?

Midnighter and Apollo (Comics) - do you want this to be its own fandom or combined with the larger DCU fandom?

X-Men (Comicverse) - do you want this to be its own fandom or combined with the larger DCU fandom?

We are still accepting nominations! They will close at 11:59 PM EDT on Thursday, 22 March. What time is that for me?

We are now at 370+ fandoms with 1,722 characters/relationships nominated. Last year there were 407 fandoms with 1,982 characters/relationships nominated as at signups, so we're tracking along much like we did last year.

There are some outstanding queries and some new ones - please look over them, provide a link to your nominations, and help the mod team out with approving your fandoms!
  • Critical Role - please nominate into either Critical Role (Tal'Dorei Campaign) and Critical Role (Wildemount Campaign).
  • DC Comics and Marvel Comics - should we go by title or by publisher?
  • Dangan Ronpa - please nominate into Dangan Ronpa (Hope's Peak Arc) or Dangan Ronpa (V3 Arc)
  • A Song of Ice and Fire and Related Fandoms - could the nominator please clarify whether they mean the books or tv show?
  • DC & DCEU - Could the nominator(s) confirm whether "Group: Diana (DCU)/Okoye (MCU)" and "Group: Okoye (MCU)/Diana (Wonder Woman)" refer to the same version of Diana?
  • Thunderbirds - do you mean a specific series?
  • Lord of the Rings All Media Types - the books are already nominated, did you mean the books or the movies?
  • Chronicles of Narnia - All Media Types - We think you mean the books. Are you able to confirm?
  • No Fandom - We think this is meant to be "Crossover Fandom". Please nominate under that fandom if our assumption is correct.
  • W.I.T.C.H - please nominate characters or relationships.

We are still listening to you about, if we do include a Horror genre tag, how to define the existing Darkfic tag to exclude horror.
Friday, March 16th, 2018 07:14 pm
Nominations are open for a little under a week more! They will close at 11:59 PM EDT on Thursday, 22 March. What time is that for me?

Tag Set Clarifications

There are over 300 fandoms already in the tag set. If tags are misspelled, associated to the wrong fandom, somehow ambiguous, or otherwise incorrect, please let us know!

We have a specific questions below the cut. If you're the nominator for these fandoms, please provide a link to your nomination form.

Questions for Crossover Fandom, The Hobbit, Critical Role, Dangan Ronpa AMT, W.I.T.C.H., and ASOAIF )

Genre Tags

Fandom 5K does not match on specific tropes, but we do use genre tags to do the following things:
  • Try to prioritize matching between participants whose tastes are broadly compatible
  • Provide some additional detail for authors who match to a request without prompts or a letter

With that in mind, we want to keep the genre tags at a high level and make them as simple as possible. Please let us know if they need any clarification!

So far, the only thing that has changed from last year is that we changed AU - SciFi/Fantasy Elements to SciFi/Fantasy. This can be used if you're interested in (for example) Harry Potter fic with an emphasis on magic, or Yuuri!!! on Ice aboard a spaceship, or an original work about the first lesbian president of an alchemist's society.

We've also been asked to add a Horror tag and are still considering that change. We agree not all Darkfic is Horror, but Horror fic could probably all be categorized as Darkfic. Can you suggest a way to rename these so Horror isn't a subset of Darkfic?

For reference, these are the current genre tags:

Welcome to the second round of Fandom 5k, and specifically to the nominations phase!

Nominations are open over here. We do not have any restrictions on what can be nominated in terms of fandom size, type, and so forth, and we also allow crossovers and original fandoms to be nominated. Please nominate crossover relationships into the Crossover Fandoms tag, and original characters and relationships into the Original Work tag.

In terms of how to nominate characters versus relationships, please follow the format below:
  • "Character A (fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A on their own. AO3 may suggest a tag to you - please do not use it for nominations and instead nominate as above. Save your mods and help prevent tag migration!
  • "Group: Character A/Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B in a ship, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A & Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom)/Character B (Fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B shipfic, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom) & Character B (Fandom)" this means you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.

We are not familiar with every fandom! As such, we will be taking guidance from you as to how your fandoms work in terms of fandom tags etc. Please watch this space for queries!

We're almost ready to kick off the 2018 round! Just a few housekeeping matters before we do.

First, the dates for nominations have moved just slightly. They will be open from 13 March to 11:59 PM EDT on 22 March. Signups will still open on 24 March. The full schedule is here.

If you defaulted late or did not check in last year but want to participate in this round, you must complete your original assignment by 23 March. The 2017 collection will remain open until then. Please shoot us an email (fandom5kmod@gmail.com) when you post so we can be sure to see it.

The 2018 FAQ and rules are up at AO3! Nothing has changed substantially from last year. As always, if anything needs clarification, please let us know.

And, finally, for those of you who prefer Tumblr to Dreamwidth, we've set up an automatic Tumblr feed for the posts to this community. All Tumblr's contact options are turned off for that account--please continue to contact us here at DW or over email.

Hello, everyone--2018 has barely begun, but we're already looking forward to the next round of Fandom 5K!

Based on feedback we received last year, we're moving the exchange about a month later to avoid major holidays and university schedules. Here is our proposed timeline:

Nominations: 14-23 March
Signups: 24 March-7 April
Assignments out by: 10 April
Default deadline: 4 May
Mandatory check-in: 5-12 May
Stories due: 2 June
Stories revealed: 16 June
Authors revealed: 23 June

If you defaulted after the deadline last year--that is, if you did not participate in the mandatory check-in or defaulted after the check-in started--you must complete your original assignment before signups open. The 2017 collection will remain open until 23 March for makeup assignments.

If you aren't sure whether this applies to you, or if you have any concerns about your original assignment, please contact us directly at fandom5kmod@gmail.com.

Hope to see you in the spring!
