Willing to offer beta services, check a story for canon compliance, or help cheerlead someone through the Fandom 5K writing process? Can you help as a subject matter expert for a language, location, or specialized area of knowledge? Fill out this Google Form to add your name to the list! You can specify what type of services you're offering, which fandoms you're interested in, and whether there's any content you're unwilling to read.

Looking for a beta reader, canon compliance checker, or someone to cheerlead you and help brainstorm plot ideas? You can find the list of offers here.

All form responses will go to the Raw Form Responses tab automatically. I’ll convert these to a more readable format on the other tabs, but that might take a little time.

[personal profile] kate_nepveu was kind enough to let me copy and modify the template she uses for Yuletide beta offers. Please let me know if there are any issues with the form or the spreadsheet.

Treats! The thing you do when you're finished your assignment or in lieu of it while hoping inspiration will come to you. For Fandom 5k treats go into one of two places:Also as a reminder: if a person has been defaulted on at the deadline (that is, their author does not turn in anything and has not defaulted by the deadline) any treat that is in the Fandom 5k collection will become their assignment. Please keep this in mind!

We are also reposting Pinch Hit 4, which has some new fandoms added to it! Please take a look and see if you could write any of these prompts! If you are interested, please comment to this post with your AO3 name. All comments are screened.

Matching is done and assignments are out! We did not have anyone who was asked to add a fandom and we were able to match on fandoms, characters/ships, and genre tags. Congratulations everyone! If there is a problem with your assignment, please let us know at fandom5kmod@gmail.com. We can't fix your problem if we don't know what it is!

The export.csv function on AO3 is down and thus making creating a spreadsheet difficult, so we have created the next best thing: a text file of all requests. If some keen person would like to turn this into a spreadsheet, let us know! Otherwise we'll upload a spreadsheet when the .csv downloader function comes back to us.

Over the weekend the treats collection will open up for treats that are less than 5k! Please keep an eye out for that post, as there are many exciting prompts waiting to be filled.

We do have seven initial pinch hits. These are not due to anyone defaulting but instead due to the matching algorithm. If you are interested in claiming these, please comment to this post with the pinch hit you wish to claim and your AO3 name. All comments are screened!

Signups will close on 28 February at 11:59 PM, EST. Here is a countdown!

At that point, we’ll start matching. Hopefully that won’t take long, but if there are any unmatchable offers, we may need some time to hear back from those people. We’ll send out assignments by 3 March at the latest.

Here is the signup form, and here is the full list of requests. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

We’re about halfway through signups! They will close on 28 February at 11:59 PM, EST. Here is a countdown!

You can see all the requests in detail here, or you can view a summary of the offered and requested fandoms.

If, when signups close, none of your offers match any of the requests, we’ll contact you by email and ask you to add fandoms or characters/relationships to your offer. You can keep an eye on the requests to be sure you’re matchable.

If you’ve written a letter and would like to link it here, you can do that here! Please comment with your AO3 name and a list of the fandoms you’re requesting.

Signups are open here! Go forth and request fic!

As you do, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the rules and the FAQ. Please let us know if they need any clarification. You can comment here or shoot us an email if you have any questions.

There are more details at the FAQ, but here are the basics:

You’ll request between 4 and 10 fandoms, with between 1 and 20 characters or relationships and between 3 and 20 genre tags per fandom.

You’ll offer between 5 and 10 fandoms, with between 1 and 20 characters or relationships and 3 and 20 genre tags per fandom.

Characters and relationships will both be in the Characters field, and you’ll receive a story focused on any one of the items you select in that field.

If you'd like a story about Character A, select Character A in this field. If you'd like a story about either Character A or Character B, select Character A, then select Character B.

If you'd like a story about Character A and Character B in a romantic or sexual relationship, select Group: Character A/Character B. If you'd like a story about Character A and Character B in a gen relationship, select Group: Character A & Character B.

You'll be matched to a recipient who requested at least one of your offered fandoms and at least one of the offered characters or relationships in that fandom. However, you can choose to write a story in any one of your recipient’s requested fandoms, focused on any one of the items (character or relationship) they requested for that fandom, even if you didn’t offer it.

The genres in the Additional Tags are intended to give a general sense of what kind of story you’d like to read or write for a given fandom. We’re going to attempt to assign offers and requests that share a genre. If that results in too many initial pinch hits, AO3’s matching code will still prioritize matches by genre.

Here is the full tag set!

Also, could the nominator for Group: Rosa Diaz/Chelsea Peretti please confirm what they mean by this ship? Our understanding is that Chelsea Peretti is the actress for Gina Linetti on Brooklyn Nine-Nine so we're confused as to what you intend this ship to be. Thank you!

Nominations will close in about 24 hours! That’s 11:59 PM EST.

The tag set is here.

In the meantime, we still have questions about the following tags. If these are your nominations, please let us know!

  1. Terminator (Movies) - the following nominations did not specify a continuity. Please clarify:
    • Group: John Connor & Kyle Reese
    • Group: John Connor/Skynet
    • Group: Sarah Connor & John Connor & Kyle Reese
  2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel - do you want these fandoms merged or separated?
  3. Shadowhunters - do you want these under the book or TV fandom?
    • Group: Alec Lightwood/Jace Wayland/Isabelle Lightwood
    • Group: Alec Lightwood/Magnus Bane/Jace Wayland
    • Group: Simon/Rafael

Let us know if there are any errors in the tag set. If you’re requesting a change to your nominations (for example, you nominated individual characters but intended to nominate a relationship), please include a link to your nominations when you comment.

We're about halfway through nominations and there's a few issues we need clarified by you guys!
  • Terminator (Movies) - we have a nomination that seems to have all of the Terminator movies folded into one fandom. Should the movies be nominated together or separately?
  • Can the nominator for Supergirl please confirm which Supergirl you mean? It looks like it is Supergirl (TV) given the nomination of James Olson, but we'd like to be sure.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel - do you want these fandoms merged or separated?
  • The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (TV 1996) - is it Gilert Markham or Gilbert Markham?
  • How to Get Away with Murder - is it Eve Rothlo or Rothlow?
  • Travelers - Group: Grant MacLaren (Travelers) & Matthew McCormick (Highlander: the Series) looks to be a crossover. Can you confirm?
  • Veronica Mars - do you want to merge the TV series and movie together?
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender - could the nominator for Zuko confirm that they want him here, please?
If there are any other tags that need correcting, please let us know!

We also remind you that matching is OR not AND, and that it is possible to nominate relationships. If you nominated characters rather than relationships by mistake, please drop a comment below with a link to your nominations and tell us what you would like us to amend your tags to be. Thank you!

Hello, everyone! Welcome to our exchange and, more importantly, welcome to nominations!

Nominations are open over here. We do not have any restrictions on what can be nominated in terms of fandom size, type, and so forth, and we also allow crossovers and original fandoms to be nominated. Please nominate crossover relationships into the Crossover Fandoms tag, and original characters and relationships into the Original Fandom tag.

In terms of how to nominate characters versus relationships, please follow the format below:
  • "Character A (fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A on their own. AO3 may suggest a tag to you - please do not use it for nominations and instead nominate as above. Save your mods and help prevent tag migration!
  • "Group: Character A/Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B in a ship, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A & Character B" - this means that you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, inside their own fandom.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom)/Character B (Fandom)" - this means that you are nominating Character A/Character B shipfic, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.
  • "Group: Character A (Fandom) & Character B (Fandom)" this means you are nominating Character A and Character B in a gen configuration, and that it is a crossover. Please be specific about fandoms, especially if there are a lot of adaptations featuring Character A and/or Character B.

We are not familiar with every fandom! As such, we are taking guidance from you, our participants, on how you want fandoms to be split up. Please comment below if your fandom is a little different to “one tag relates to one self-contained instalment of canon”. We are especially interested in how tags should be split up or combined for the following fandoms:
  • Star Wars;
  • Tolkien;
  • DC and Marvel’s television and cinematic franchises;
  • Gundam;
  • Doctor Who;
  • Star Trek;
  • X-Men (Movieverse);
  • Stargate;
  • Power Rangers;
  • Pokemon;
  • Kamen Rider.

Finally, there has been some discussion about whether genre tags are necessary and whether it makes more sense to require people to fill in optional details. Thank you for your feedback! Requiring participants to provide a prompt would necessitate going through every fandom for every signup and checking that letters are complete and unlocked, which is too much micromanagement. On the other hand, we don’t want anyone to be assigned a blank signup or a locked/incomplete letter and have nothing to go on for a 5,000-word story. We’re happy to listen to suggestions about the number of genre tags required or whether other genres should be added, but we’ve decided requiring genre tags is a necessary compromise. Based on how things go in the first round and on your feedback, we’ll consider changing things up next time.

All that done, nominations are open! Go forth, nominate, get excited about writing and receiving longfic for your fandoms, and tell all your friends!

EDIT: Could the nominator for Pretty in Pink please confirm what characters you nominated? We lost your character noms during the approval process. Thanks!
Never mind, found them!

Hey, everyone! Hope you’re as excited about this as we are. Nominations open on 7 February, just a couple of weeks away.

Before we kick things off, here’s a quick summary of how the exchange will work. We’ll give more information on each step of the process later on.

Questions can be left in the comments or sent to fandom5kmod@gmail.com.

Defaults and Mandatory Check-In:

Explanations and Feedback:

Most of these decisions were made because 5,000 words is a big commitment, and we’re guaranteeing a story of that length for everyone who fulfills their assignment. We want to keep initial pinch hits low and, in the event of defaults, give pinch hitters more options to choose from.

To do that, we could either increase the number of fandoms required or the number of character/relationship tags per fandom. We’ve decided to try a slightly higher number of fandoms but only require one character/relationship tag in each. We’ve also instituted the mandatory check-in period to give pinch hitters as much time as possible.

We’ll see how the first round works with these rules, and then we’ll consider changing things up for the next round based on how smoothly this goes and on your feedback. Keep an eye out for a feedback post after reveals!

Note that we’re still finalizing the list of genre tags, though, so please review that section and leave a comment if you have suggestions!
