Creators are revealed, but the collection is still open for new works, of which we've had several already! And, of course, you can continue to read and comment to your heart's content.

Find more to read here!

Thank you to everyone who participated this year, and especially to all the pinch hitters who got us across the finish line--I appreciate you very much.

I also have an announcement to make:

Next year will be the tenth round of Fandom5K, if you can believe that! I've also decided it will be the last.

I've had a great time running this exchange, I've met some amazing people, and I've been delighted to see millions and millions of words posted to make other fans happy. However, ten years is a long time to do anything, and I'm ready to focus on personal projects. The exchange scene is much busier now than it was when CBMod and I kicked this off--hopefully participants can find plenty of other options throughout the year.

My plan is to retire the exchange rather than handing it over to a new mod, but of course anyone is welcome to start up an exchange on a similar theme. If you are interested in doing so and have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

To make the tenth and final year something we can all look forward to, two sub-announcements:

First, I plan to announce the 2026 schedule by 1 February, 2026.

Hopefully that way everyone who wants to join can plan ahead more easily, and hopefully I can keep myself from letting the schedule creep later and later every year, as it has a habit of doing.

Second, I am issuing an amnesty to anyone who defaulted late in 2025 or previous years, as long as that default occurred before the works due deadline.

That is, if you forgot to contact me during check-in week, or you checked in but then hit the default button before the deadline because something came up, you no longer need to create a make-up assignment to participate in the final round.

If you didn't default before the works due deadline--maybe you simply didn't show up on that date and never turned a work in, or you defaulted with an extension--I will still ask you to turn in a makeup assignment before signing up next year. This also may apply if you turned in a placeholder or your gift otherwise didn't fulfill our rules.

If you have any questions about how this amnesty applies to you, please let me know! I may take a little time to get back to you during the offseason, so I'd suggest asking early if you need to plan ahead.

Matching is in progress, and we should have your assignments out shortly! Initial pinch hits will follow.

We'd also like to announce some updates and clarification to our makeup assignment rules.

First, we've reviewed and updated our makeup assignment policy for assignments in general. Moving forward, if you default after the no-penalty default deadline, then before you are able to sign up for the next year's round you are required to complete your original assignment. The deadline for makeup assignments each year is the day before signups open for that round. After the first year, you can make up the assignment by completing a pinch hit or a treat in any subsequent round, instead of your original assignment. (This means that if you defaulted late in 2021 or earlier, you can sign up in 2023 if you complete a treat or pinch hit in this year's round.)

Second, we've realized our FAQ isn't clear about whether the default deadline & makeup assignments apply to pinch hits, so we've taken the opportunity to discuss that rule. Moving forward, defaulting on a pinch hit will not require a makeup assignment, and the FAQ has been updated to clarify this. This also applies retroactively to any pinch hits you may have defaulted on in the past.

Please note that posting a placeholder or incomplete work at the deadline and failing to update it when contacted, or posting a work at the deadline and deleting it without replacement, are exceptions to the above. These are not allowed.

As always, if you have questions about your default status from prior years or would like to use an old assignment as your makeup work but don't know if the recipient is still interested, please email us to discuss!

We're almost ready to kick off the 2018 round! Just a few housekeeping matters before we do.

First, the dates for nominations have moved just slightly. They will be open from 13 March to 11:59 PM EDT on 22 March. Signups will still open on 24 March. The full schedule is here.

If you defaulted late or did not check in last year but want to participate in this round, you must complete your original assignment by 23 March. The 2017 collection will remain open until then. Please shoot us an email (fandom5kmod@gmail.com) when you post so we can be sure to see it.

The 2018 FAQ and rules are up at AO3! Nothing has changed substantially from last year. As always, if anything needs clarification, please let us know.

And, finally, for those of you who prefer Tumblr to Dreamwidth, we've set up an automatic Tumblr feed for the posts to this community. All Tumblr's contact options are turned off for that account--please continue to contact us here at DW or over email.

Hello, everyone--2018 has barely begun, but we're already looking forward to the next round of Fandom 5K!

Based on feedback we received last year, we're moving the exchange about a month later to avoid major holidays and university schedules. Here is our proposed timeline:

Nominations: 14-23 March
Signups: 24 March-7 April
Assignments out by: 10 April
Default deadline: 4 May
Mandatory check-in: 5-12 May
Stories due: 2 June
Stories revealed: 16 June
Authors revealed: 23 June

If you defaulted after the deadline last year--that is, if you did not participate in the mandatory check-in or defaulted after the check-in started--you must complete your original assignment before signups open. The 2017 collection will remain open until 23 March for makeup assignments.

If you aren't sure whether this applies to you, or if you have any concerns about your original assignment, please contact us directly at fandom5kmod@gmail.com.

Hope to see you in the spring!
